I spent 20 years in the Navy, 10 of which was on aircraft carriers. Close calls like that usually end in disaster. That pilot looked like he was on a pretty good glide path until he veered off to port. I would guess that the dirty air behind the island threw him for a loop. Either that, or he suffered a bad case of cranial-rectal inversion.
