When I was a kid I once rode a BSA 650 in the time trials at a nearby
drag strip (Alton Raceway, long gone now). In the trials there were
just two lines, and you ran next to whoever got to the front of the
other line when you reached the head of your own line. I was next to a
nice-looking 32 Ford with a late-model OHV engine, 3 carbs, etc.

The flag dropped and I jumped the guy by many lengths. Lying over the
handlebars I peeked back and saw that he was maybe half a city block
behind me. But then the bike reached its flat spot and he began to get
bigger and bigger in my vision. He shot past me so fast I could hear
the doppler shift in the roar of his pipes.
