Others have already responded in kind, so to keep this short, my rule of thumb when I was flying large thermal ships was that changes of at least 1 oz/sq.ft. were needed to begin to notice a difference, with 2 oz/sq.ft changes making things obvious.  A little too light is usually worse than a little to heavy IMHO, but that was the way I liked my planes to fly....
