Mark is right. A smooth shaft, I used aluminum, holds the best. The end is the only thing to be careful about. Chaffing is the only thing to worry about. I also used wood dowels but the AL was better.
Yes the Hobby Lobby connectors that I've tried are cute little things. BUT, when I tried them they would let the tubing slip off beyond 2X stretch. Completely unacceptable.
