Dave Matheson is running, here's an excerpt answer he sent me.
He had sent all the Leader Members a note saying he was running. I posted
him a note saying that I would like to have someone who has a clue about more
than just powered planes or free flights to be leading. I asked what he
knew about RC soaring and specifically the no contact combat rule discussion
that caught us foamie combat guys in its net.
While I didn't ask permission to reprint this, he is running for AMA Pres and I figured its pretty much public information...good information ;-) To me it showed that he wasn't lazy, and was willing to do some research to find out more about someone else's part of the hobby before making an opinion. I think we'd
both agree that it's not practical to expect one person to be an expert in every
modeling discipline. I do think it's important though that that person seek
out the opinions of the experts that participate in a certain style of
flying.
Since you
brought up the full contact combat issue, let's talk about that. My position on
that issue was out on several newsgroups for everyone to see (it's still there
if you do a search). I was opposed to an all out ban on FCC exactly because of
the reasons you mention. In fact, I worked with Dave Garwood and exchanged
dome emails with Lorne Blinde and some others to find a solution
counter to the proposed ban. In preparing for the EC meeting where this was to
be discussed I borrowed the tape "Lift Ticket" from Joe Chovan and was prepared
to show it in support of not imposing an all out ban on FCC. Fortunately it
never got that far because a majority of the EC had already decided this wasn't
a direction we wanted to go in.
In my campaign
statement I suggest working with those that fly a discipline when creating
guidelines for that discipline. That's what I've always tried to do and would
continue that. BTW, I do know what DS is although I'd be the first to tell you I
don;t quite understand the physics.
