<<While on the subject, what is a good trickle charger and where can one be purchased? Are there plans available from which I could build my own?>> I've had very good luck with the Schumacher brand solid state chargers (also at Wal Mart). They have a connector you can attach to the battery to allow plug-in or clamp connections, they handle 6V or 12V, and go into trickle (or "float") mode when the battery is topped off. The price seems reasonable. Indicator LEDs (charge, float, trouble) are handy. They're not for fast charging at the field but seem to work very well for over night and maintenance charging.
