I can remember a time when 2 meter was the vast majority, and open was a
'freak' class for a few iconoclasts. All my conventional gliders were/are in
the
2m size range. To me they are nearly the optimum of size and flyability versus
compact transportability, all on a budget within the grasp of the average
flyer.

I think it's way too early to declare the death of 2 meter, I think what
we're seeing is a statistical wave as a current generation of older modelers
work
their way thru the various classes and activities in soaring, also buying and
spending bigger as they get older. I would find it interesting to see if I'm
not right, and an oncoming generation of flyers doesn't start on the small side
again, especially with the boom in DHL, slope, and electrics. Considering
ever-shrinking fields and reduced access to the great wide open spaces of our
youth, if anything, the Big Plane Craze is probably the one that will lapse as
impractical, and 2 meter will see a resurgence in the long run. Just my own
opinion, take it or leave it. I wouldn't mind owning open class gliders, but I
still have plenty to learn from 2-meters.

Thermals,
