**** I suspect we would not harm the 2M class at the Nats with only one day
of flying and would certainly enhance the flying time for NOS and RES. ****
I kinda like this idea.
There seems to be a broad spectrum of opinion about 2M and other classes.
Sounds like high end competition pilots don't like to it much whereas many
others do.
I'll again note that I don't see many newbies showing up at the field with a
3M full house moldie. But I do see them come out with a 2M TD or 1.8M speed
400. So let's play to the strength of that distribution.
RES and other events seem to be popular. 2M still makes a good entry level
competitive event. So maybe the answer is to change the distribution of events
(as suggested).
One 'side-effect' of having classes is it encourages suppliers to design and
manufacture to the class limit. OK, so 2M is tough to design for competition
against open class ships (I don't think we've exhausted that potential, by
the way). However, a good competition class 2M is a nice step-up from a Gentle
Lady and is usually more affordable than a hollow core molded open class
ship.
A good example (perhaps) of a class driving development is the emergence of
the Bubble Dancer and AVA. Would we have such really interesting RES ships if
RES were not a competition class?
As a competition class, 2M suffers as compared to open. However, it has some
attraction as an entry or intermediate level format that doesn't have to
break the bank for those getting started. I do think it's important to keep
that
part of the flying population in mind as regional and national events are
being planned.
