Before I started using skegs, I use to jump up in the air and let the plane slide under me. 
 
Of course, there was always the chance that the plane could decide to stop sliding while it was under you and then you would land on top of it. :-(
 
I go to lots of contests and I've never seen anyone hurt with a skeg. I have had my shins hurt and have seen many other people hit their shins when flying without a skeg.

If you are flying to compete then yes as your competition will have them and you will be at a disadvantage. If you are flying a contest to have fun and not worrying about skidding threw the landing then just pad your shins and hope your leading edge is made of rubber.  (-:

Does it help you get those points? Forget it they are a hazard to fly with!
