If you're using a standard telescoping transmitter antenna, it will radiate
the most energy from the side. The way to increase signal to your model is to
hold the radio up and away from any nearby objects, and point the antenna at
a right angle to the direction toward your model, in a position that is as
close as possible to being parallel to the receiver's antenna wire.

If you normally point the tip of your antenna at your model, which seems to
be the most popular and natural position for most of us, then you should have
available the emergency reserve that you're looking for.

If you're using a shorter "rubber ducky" type antenna, it will behave
