We adore our Subaru SVX for trips to the flying field, which just happens to be more than 70 miles away.

The SVX is one of the few "concept cars" to actually make it to market. Body by Giugiaro Italy. It has a four speed auto transmission with all wheel drive and passive rear steering. It's powered with a 230 HP flat six which turns just 2000 RPM at 60 MPH, 4000 at 115; Vmax is 160 MPH. Engine and transmission computers keeping track of your driving style and it gets 20+ mpg in town, 30+ on long freeway trips - better than our 100 HP Toyota that never got better than 29 - yet still delivers performance, i.e. acceleration, when called upon. The drag coefficient is one of the lowest of any automobile, and it can pull 0.9g in a turn. And with leather seats and climate control it's very comfortable on extensive drives.

Our XC fits across the folded back seat or front to back through the pass-through with plenty of room for other aircraft plus winch and field gear in the expansive trunk.

The styling of the SVX is unique, and the model is relatively rare as only about 14,000 were produced over the six year production span, 1992-1997. We bought ours from a SASS member who worked for Fuji Heavy Industries, the Subaru parent company, when he returned to Japan.

The SVX is a great car which for some reason was never extensively promoted by Subaru.
