I used the Channel Checker to verify the channel number of all transmitters
at the Airfoilers 35th Annual Sailplane contest. All checked OK with two
exceptions. I noted that one transmitter illuminated several diodes when
the antenna was almost touching the Channel Checker. The transmitter
checked good when the antenna was moved a foot away. Not all transmitters
affected the Channel Checker this way. Made me wonder if that was swamping
or was the transmitter that illuminated more than one diode at close range
was splattering a little. Something I want to investigate if I run into it
again while not rushed by trying to get a contest under way.
Bubba brought his transmitter over to be checked with the Channel 12 pin
clipped to the antenna. Channel Checker showed that the transmitter was on
Channel 58. I ask Bubba if this was one of those dial-a-crash
transmitters. He said this was a crystal controlled transmitter and pulled
the RF module to show me. On the inside was a channel 58 label. Bubba was
having a little fun. Incidentally this was the Bubba of BubbaDancer fame
also known as Rob Glover.
Chuck Anderson
PS. Bubba also had the Channel 58 pin when he brought his transmitter over
to be checked.
