The problem with the booting on new Macs (all 64 bit Macs) is that they use EFI and for some unknown reason some component in Linux doesn't support booting a 32 bit Linux OS from a 64 bit EFI system. Its on my todo list to investigate exactly which component is at fault and to bother/bribe/etc who ever it is that maintains it to fix the problem.
