olpc-switch-desktop is intended for use with /usr/sbin/olpc-dm which is part of olpc-utils package. There is no login screen when using /usr/sbin/olpc-dm, and so there is only one user expected.
Your chosen display manager package should provide desktop choice. Are you using gdm?
