Interview with John Payne, Zumbox
----
John Payne is a experienced entrepreneur, who has run two, public
Internet companies -- Stamps.com and Day Software -- in addition to
helping to run a number of startups. He's now head of Los
Angeles-based Zumbox (www.zumbox.com). We caught up with John to learn
about what Zumbox is up to nowadays in the digital postal delivery
area, after Series C round announced by the company earlier this
month.

John, thanks for the time today. Can you explain to us what your
business looks like now, and what you offer to your customers?

John Payne: We've pioneered what's become known as the digital mailbox
space. In the (More...)

BUZZMEDIA Trims Spin Magazine
----
Los Angeles-based digital media publisher BUZZMEDIA is wasting no time
reshaping SPIN Magazine, the venerable music and culture publication
it acquired earlier this month, and is reportedly already cleaning
house. Billboard magazine reports that BUZZMEDIA has already begun
layoffs at the magazine, which is expected to halt print publication
with its September/October issue. BUZZMEDIA has not said what it plans
to do with SPIN, but the brand undoubtedly will be directed towards
bolstering its already large lineup of online, music-focused websites.
BUZZMEDIA runs Stereogum, Idolator, XLR8R, and many other popular
music and entertainment properties.

StockTwits Integrates With Chartly
----
San Diego-based StockTwits, the online, stock-focused micro messaging
startup, said Friday that it has integrated its service with social
charting service Chartly. Stocktwits said the deal allows users to
search, view, and share charts and videos within its service. As part
of the integration, Chartly's site now redirects to the StockTwits
site. Chartly, originally a developer of publicly accessible stock
charting tools, had been acquired by StockTwits in 2009. StockTwits is
led by Howard Lindzon.

JustEnough Software Lands Retailer Five Below
----
Newport Beach-based JustEnough Software, which develops software for
managing inventory, reported a win with pre-teen retailer Five Below
this morning. Financial details of the win were not announced by the
company. JustEnough said Five Below will use its for merchandise
financial planning. JustEnough is headed by Malclm Buxton.

PayDragon Reveals $1.35M Seed Funding For Mobile Payments
----
Los Angeles-based PayDragon has raised $1.35M in its seed funding, the
firm disclosed Friday. The firm--which had earlier disclosed the seed
round, but without dollar amounts--said the funding included Rustic
Canyon Ventures, SV Angel, and Y Combinator, as well as Yuri Milner
and Mark Schwartz. PayDragon is led by Hamilton Chan, and is aimed at
making it easier for users to pay for local items using their mobile
phone. The company is a refinement of Paperlinks, the QR-code based
marketing firm started by Chan.

Unique Way To Name Your Company: Run A Poll
----
Here's a unique way to figure out a name for your company: run a
public survey vetting some of the possible names for your startup. One
of the companies out of San Diego's EvoNexus incubator sent out an
email Friday via EvoNexus, saying that it's looking for a new name to
offer up a service to provide customer care over social networks such
as Facebook and Twitter. The company--Face It Corp., which apparently
is running it business under a different brand name--asks such
questions as what name would be associated with a "hot new California
startup" along with trying to identify positive and negative
associations with its list of possible names. Although private polls
are not new in the world of naming products and startups, at least for
the local area, it's probably the first to show up in a public forum.

Wonderville Takes On Educational Content For Kids
----
A new, Los Angeles startup, Wonderville has launched to take on
curating educational content on the web, providing links and videos to
different content on a wide range of educational content for K-8
education. The company said last week that it is looking to create
"smart galleries" of digital content and videos around educational
topics like history, science, popular culture, and more. The founders
are Mark Eastwood, David Lenz, and Lawrence Leach, who all apparently
are vets of the original eToys. Eastwood, who serves as CEO of the
company, was most recently worked at Brighter.com and Business.com
with Jake Weinbaum.
