Connexity, Headed By Dave Gross, Finds $3M More
----
Connexity the online advertising startup headed by former Fastclick
co-founder Dave Gross, announced this morning that it has raised $3M
in a seed funding round. The round was led by Rincon Venture Partners,
and also included Siemer Ventures, Persistence Partners and Fastclick
Cofounders Jeff Pryor and Dave Gross. Connexity, according to Gross,
does to online ads what Amazon and Netflix do for products and movies.
The company uses advertising to recommend products and services to
users, based on individual interests and what it is calling "audience
graph analysis." (More...)

----
San Diego-based renewable chemicals developer Genomatica has dropped
its IPO plans, according to a regulatory filing by the company this
morning. The firm, which had filed for a $100M IPO in August of 2011,
said in a withdrawal of its registration, that it has determined not
to proceed with its IPO, "in light of current market conditions."
Genomatica is venture backed by TPG biotechnology Partners, Mohr
Davidow Ventures, VantagePoint Venture Partners, Alloy Ventures,
Draper Fisher Jurvetson, WM Organic Growth and others. The firm
announced that instead, the company has raised $41.5M from its

MomentFeed Connects Into foursquare
----
Los Angeles-based MomentFeed, the startup developing location-based
analytics software for brands, said Wednesday afternoon that it has
connected its service directly into foursquare, allowing its customers
to use MomentFeed to publish and manage their foursquare updates.
MomentFeed said the move allows brands to add text, photos, and other
information for their brand pages, single venues, or groups of venues
on the foursquare service. MomentFeed's software is being used by
brands to better understand how users are interacting with their
locations on social services such as Foursquare, Instagram, Facebook,
and others, on a location-by-location basis. MomentFeed said its new
Foursquare updates include ability to schedule updates, and manage
those updates on a corporate, regional, or local level.

Boingo Wins Wendy's Wi-Fi
----
Wi-Fi is coming to the Wendy's fast food franchise, thanks to a deal
announced this morning by Los Angeles-based Boingo Wireless, a
provider of Wi-Fi networking services. Boingo said that it has been
selected by The Wendy's Company to manage and operate Wi-Fi services
at participating Wendy's company restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.
Financial details of the deal were not announced. Boingo said it will
operate, install and maintain the networks at the restaurant chain,
including both company and franchise locations. The company did not
say how many Wendy's restaurants it expects to provide with the
wireless service, which will be free to Wendy's visitors.

Nami Ships PPC Bid Engine
----
Los Angeles-based Nami, which provides pay-per-click advertising
software and is run by Alex Cory, said that it has released a new
product today, Nami AdManager. The new software is a white label bid
engine used for pay-per-click bidding. The company said the new
product allows networks and their advertisers to create, price, and
distribute PPC ads, giving them control over keywords, bulk uploading
and downloading tools, conversion tracking tools, and more.

Coloft Launches Seminar Series
----

its own series of seminars aimed at startups, ranging from help on
social media, to business development, to pitching investors. The

particularly in Silicon Beach and Santa Monica.

Weplay Signs Denny's Sponsorship Deal In New York
----
Weplay, the online social media site focused on youth sports, has
inked a sponsorship deal with the owner of thirty local Denny's
restaurants in New York, to sign up local sports teams for the
platform, the company announced Wednesday. The Los Angeles company,
which is headed by Lane Soelberg, said that 30 Denny's restaurants in
the Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo, New York area will sponsor 200
local teams with free, premium sites on the service. As part of the
effort, they will launch a "Game Days at Denny's" fundraiser to donate
a portion of the proceeds from food purchases to those teams.
Financial details of the sponsorship deal were not announced. The deal
was made with Denny's franchisee Topline Restaurants, which owns the
30 Denny's restaurants. Weplay provides an online, social media site
that helps kids, coaches, parents, and teams share photos, videos,
schedules, and more.

United Online Plans Split With FTD
----
It looks like the odd marriage between United Online's communications,
online content and media businesses with FTD, the company's flower
delivery service, is about to end, after the company said Wednesday
afternoon that its board has approved a plan to split the two into
two, independent public traded companies. (More...)

Spotify Heads To LA To Promote Music Service
----
Online music service Spotify has chosen to kick off a live music tour
to promote its service, next week in Los Angeles, according to a
report Wednesday from Mashable. The tour is apparently set to start on
Wednesday, August 8th in Silver Lake, with a concert from YACHT and
The Henry Clay People. Los Angeles is the first stop of a tour which
will eventually end up in San Francisco, Portland, St. Louis, New
Orleans and Miami. Spotify operates an online, streaming music
service. Spotify's tour is being sponsored by Bacardi, which announced
the music tour last month; the tour's centerpiece is a great big,
green bus.

POP Charger Passes $91K In Donations
----
Is crowdsourcing donations a reasonable alternative to seed funding?
Based on the experience so far of POP Charger, the Kickstarter
project being run by local entrepreneur Jamie Siminoff, it seems to
be. According to the project's page Wednesday morning, it has now
racked up over $91,000 in pledges (and growing), nearly double the
project's initial $50,000 goal--an amount that brings it clearly into
seed territory, without any need to give away equity. The POP project
is an effort to develop a high capacity, portable charger which can
charge multiple iPhones, iPads, Android phones, or other electronics
devices. The project passed its goal of $50K last week, only three
days after it was posted.

Los Angeles-based Hulu, the online video streaming service, said
Tuesday that it will air new seasons of two series, "Misfits", and
"The Booth at the End". Misfits is a UK series, which is seeing its
fourth season running on Hulu and Hulu Plus. The series had been
launched by Hulu in partnership with BBC Worldwide Americas last year,
and according to the firm is one of its most popular shows on Hulu.
The series is one of a number of international titles, which have
bypassed television and got direct to Hulu. The second series, "The
Booth at the End", is a psychological thriller in its second season on
the service.
