Catching Up With Joanne Bradford, Demand Media
----
Santa Monica-based Demand Media (www.demandmedia.com) has seen its
share of ups and downs as one of the highest visibility technology and
media companies to come out of Southern California's technology
ecosystem in recent years. The company went from a venture backed high
tech startup to an IPO as a publicly traded firm, and over its time
has battled the perception of being a "content farm", suffered through
Google and its Panda update, and now has emerged as a major content
partner for Google, via YouTube. The firm has now become one of the
largest technology companies in Southern California, and one which is
committed to the region. To learn more about where Demand Media is
today and how it has evolved, we sat down with Joanne Bradford, Chief
Revenue Officer at Demand Media.

What is Demand Media doing nowadays?

Joanne Bradford: The first thing we start with everyday, is listening
to the signal of what people are doing. Our whole goal is to create
content for real life. We've built a (More...)

NASA Curiosity Lands On Mars
----
NASA's Curiosity Rover, the car-sized, robotic explorer run out of
Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has landed successfully on Mars,
touching down on the Red Planet at 10:32 p.m. Sunday evening. The
robotic space vehicle is now scheduled to begin a two-year mission to
explore a giant crater on the planet. The rover was designed,
developed, and assembled at JPL, which is a division of the California
Institute of Technology (Caltech). The successful landing adds to an
already resurging space industry in Southern California, which has
seen a big upswing in space-related technology in the past few years.
Just Friday, another local, space effort--commercial rocket firm
SpaceX--announced a $440M deal with NASA to start delivering
astronauts to space; and Boeing, which also won $460M in that same

Rover is now expected to begin a science mission to start checking the

of the rocks on Mars.

TriNet: Top 5 HR Compliance Concerns for Small Business

As the economic horizon continues to shift and belts tighten, small and
medium sized companies — who typically have between 10 to 500 employees
and represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms according to the U.S.
Small Business Administration (SBA) — may wind up being so focused on core
business issues that they overlook one of their most potentially serious
and costly issues — human resource compliance.

Unlike their large-company counterparts, they lack the time and resources
to build infrastructure and processes that are beyond core business
objectives. But if entrepreneurs and smaller business owners are focused
solely on growth and product, how do they know what issues to look for in
order to protect the company? This is a must-read paper that discusses the
top 5 HR compliance issues they may face.

August 15, Costa Mesa -- OCAMA Signature Speaker Series - Peter Kraus, UCLA
Anderson School of Business. Topic: "Word of Mouth in the Modern World -
Selling in a Tempest"
Times of adversity create the greatest opportunities. If business people
know what to do they would judiciously exploit the resources available,
but they are not necessarily trained to hear the subtle and complex, but
not vague customer message for developing a more effective value
proposition. The Great Recession is 'bigger" than The Great Depression,
with 40% of collage graduates unable to find a job, with institutions of
all kinds failing in every which way, while people and corporations with
capital realize greater gains and record profits unheard of in the history
of the United States. In these times when nothing is as it was and
technology has changed everything we have to use unusual tactics and
unconventional and counterintuitive countermeasures to reach our goals and
objectives in what seems to be a fire storm. See
