The new fund said it made its first investment, part of an $80M investment in biopharmaceuticals firm Relypsa. Size of the new fund was not announced. Sibling Capital said its fund comes from a variety of high net worth individual investors, including Jim Givan. Sibling's co-founders are Dr. Sandra Coufal and Brian Isern. The firm joins OrbiMed Advisors, 5AM Ventures, New Leaf Venture Partners, Sprout Group, Delphi Ventures and Mediphase Venture Partners in the Relpysa financing deal. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showco&id=33772 ViSalus, Headed by LA Tech Entrepreneur, Files For $175M IPO ---- ViSalus, a nutritional supplements maker co-founded by Los Angeles-based, technology entrepreneur Ryan Blair, has filed for an IPO, saying that it is looking to raise up to $175M in an IPO. Exchange and other details of the IPO have not yet been set for the company, whose corporate name is FVA Ventures. ViSalus was co-founded by Ryan Blair, who also founded PathConnect, a Los Angeles social networking site; SkyPipeline, a broadband fixed wireless company in Los Angeles; and 24x7 Tech, a technology support firm in Los Angeles. ViSalus is based in Troy, Michigan. Blair is CEO, and remains in Los Angeles. Contour Energy Systems Names New CEO ---- Azusa-based battery technology firm Contour Energy Systems announced this morning that it has named Louis E. Lupo as the company's new President and CEO. Lupo joins from T3 Technology, and also has served at EaglePicher Technologies, Honeywell International, and BE Aerospace. The firm said that Lupo, a 25-year vet of the industry, will drive strategic growth in aerospace, defense, medical and other niche primary-battery markets. Contour Energy is developing Flourine-based battery technology originally developed at Caltech and CNRS, the French National Center for Scientific Research. The reason for the executive switchup was not announced by the company. GumGum Names Winders Marketing VP ---- Los Angeles-based GumGum, the provider of in-image advertising technology, said this morning that it has named Tony Winders as its Senior Vice President of Marketing. Winders was most recently running his own consulting practice, serving such clients as Rocket Fuel, Fraser Communications, Causecast, Fanzila, Momentfeed and LuxeYard. Winders also served at ValueClick Media, and was a pioneer in the interactive agency world, having founded iAgency back in 1995. GumGum is venture backed by GRP Partners, First Round Capital, New Enterprise Associates and Crosscut Ventures. Image Metrics Releases SDK For Mobile App Developers ---- Santa Monica-based Image Metrics, which develops computer vision and facial analysis and expression tracking software, said Wednesday that it has released a new software development kit for mobile developers. The firm said its new mobile app SDK, which runs on Apple iOS, allows developers to use its technology on augmented reality applications and games. The SDK allows mobile apps to capture, analyze, and replicate a user's facial expressions and emotions. Image Metrics did not how much it will cost developers to use the technology in their apps. The firm's products recently were put into use by Sony Online Entertainment, in a feature which takes a user's expression, and captures their expressions and puts them on their online avatars in EverQuest II. Active Network Buys Plancast ---- Plancast, an online service which lets you plan events and share those plans with friends, has been acquired by San Diego-based Active Network. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Plancast's CEO, in a very public "post mortem" post on TechCrunch in January, had said the firm was shutting down, and outlined the various issues the company had run across. Active Network relaunched Plancast with a new design today. EcoMom Finds $4.7M More ---- EcoMom, the online e-commerce site focused on organic and eco-friendly products for children, disclosed this week that it has raised $4.7M in an additional funding round. The round came form Blue Pacific Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Cue Ball, Rising Tide, Vegas Tech Rhodium and Embarcadero Ventures. EcoMom (Won Inc.) is headed by Jody Sherman, and started its life as Sprout Baby. The company looks to have now raised in the range of $10M for its efforts. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44736 Movieclips Becomes ZEFR, Raises $18.5M ---- Venice-based Movieclips, the online movie clips site and content site founded by Zach James and Richard Raddon, said today that it has raised $18.9M in a Series C funding round, and has rebranded itself as ZEFR. The new funding round was led by U.S. Venture Partners, and also included MK Capital, Shasta Ventures, SoftTech VC, First Round Capital, Richmond Park Partners, and Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise. John Hald of USVP joins the company's board with the funding. The company said the name change comes as it begins to expand into television, music, and sports content, and starts its international expansion and further invests in new technology. The company said it is now focused on creating professional content on YouTube, including applying technology to identify and claim licensed content on the site so that it can be monetized by publishers. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44139 PageWoo Finds Funding ---- Los Angeles-based Pagewoo, the mobile advertising startup founded by Holden Steinberg and Jason Crilly, has quietly scored a round of funding, which was disclosed by the Tech Coast Angels this morning. Financial details of the angel funding round, which closed earlier this year, have not been announced. Pagewoo--which is in private beta--was part of Howard Marks' StartEngine incubator earlier in the year. PageWoo, which is calling itself "the first mobile re-engagement platform" on its site, now looks to be working on providing geo-targeted, demographic targeting, analytics, and other tools for the mobile market, although the firm remains in stealth mode. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=44732 Tech Coast Angels Invests $4.5M In First Half Of 2012 ---- The Tech Coast Angels said Wednesday that it has totalled up its investments for the first half of 2012, and found that it invested $4,571,000 in direct investments--as part of $10M in funding--for 17 companies. The angel investment group, which is the largest in Southern California, as well as the nation, said firms receiving funding from the group included Active Life Scientific, Cadence Biomedical, Cashie Commerce, Cognition Therapeutics, Emerald Logic, ExtendCredit, Gemmus Pharma, GridTest Systems, H2scan, Hipmunk, Pagewoo, PetPlay, Social Annex, Social Rewards, ViroPan, Vokle, and Wasatch Microfluidics. Some, but not all of those fundings had been announced earlier. The group said that investments were fairly consistent compared with the same period in 2011, when it invested $4.4M in 17 companies. As part of the deal information, the Tech Coast Angels said it specifically is looking to support the new accelerators and incubators in Southern California with investments. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showco&id=31 SheKnows Launches Parenting Website, AllParenting ---- Los Angeles-based SheKnows, the online women's publishing site owned by Atomic Online/Evolve Media Corp., said Wednesday that it has launched a new site, AllParenting.com. The new site is focused on parents, and specifically mothers, with content on family, home, style, pregnancy, prom, and other topics. As part of the new site, SheKnows said it has tapped fellow Los Angeles firm EQAL to include contributions from celebrities Tori Spelling, Alicia Silverstone, and Kendra Wilkinson, via EQAL's Celebrity Influencer Networks. The new site includes everything from text to video, along with social features that connect with Facebook or Twitter. The new site is being headed by executive editor Kristin Bustamante. Caltech Team Wins Top Prize, $100K In Bill Gates' Toilet Tech Effort ---- A team for the California Institute of Technology has scored the top prize, and $100,000, in a major technology effort--funded by Bill Gates--to reinvent the toilet. Gates, the billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, announced an effort to help advance the technology of toilets, saying that current flush technology is "irrelevant, impractical and impossible for 40 percent of the global population". Gates' philanthropic organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, said it will invest $3.4M in advancing toilet projects, as part of an overall $6.5 "Reinvent the Toilet Challenge". The Caltech team won the top prize for its solar-powered toilet that generates hydrogen and electricity.
