Burn This Number After Calling: Greg Cohn on Burner

Almost everyone has had some situation where you wanted to give
someone a phone number, but only temporarily--think Craigslist, or
maybe at that bar or business conference, where you want to hand out a
number, but only have it work for a short while. It turns you, you can
actually do that, with Burner, a new iPhone app developed by Los
Angeles startup Ad Hoc Labs. We caught up with serial entrepreneur
Greg Cohn, who brought us up to speed on what Burner is about, and the
story behind the app.

Let's talk first about your app. Can you describe what it does and how it works?

Greg Cohn: Burner is an app that we think of as a privacy layer for

Rumor: Hulu's Kilar Set For $100M Payday
----
A report published Sunday by Variety says that Jason Kilar, the CEO of
Los Angeles-based online video site Hulu, is set to cash out as much
as $100M after the site's management buyout funded by Providence
Equity Partners. The report also said that the company is now making
plans in case Kilar decides to depart the firm after receiving that
kind of windfall, citing an internal report cover the need to "outline
transition plan for new CEO". The report is just the latest in a
string of reports of Kilar looking to other pastures; just in the last
couple of months, he's been named as a potential top hire at Facebook
and Yahoo.

Regulus Therapeutics Files For IPO
----
San Diego-based Regulus Therapeutics has filed for an IPO, saying that
it is looking to raised up to $57.5M in an IPO on the NASDAQ Global
Market. The developer of microDNA-based biopharmaceuticals said it
hopes to trade as RGLS. The IPO is being underwritten by Lazard
Capital Markets, Cowen and Company, BMO Capital Markets, Needham &
Company and Wedbush PacGrow Life Sciences. Regulus Therapeutics is a
spinout of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals and Isis Pharmaceuticals, which are
the company's two largest shareholders; Aventis, Glaxo, and
AstraZeneca also owns stakes in the firm.

Crackle Launches Windows Phone, NOOK Apps
----
Culver City-based Crackle, the online video streaming and
entertainment site which features Sony Pictures library of television
and film properties, announced Friday that it has launched both
Windows Phone and NOOK Tablet apps. Crackle also said it will be
releasing a Amazon Kindle Fire version of the app. The new app allows
users to view ad-supported films and television series from the site.
Crackle already offered up iPhone, iPad, and iPod versions of the app.
Crackle said it app allows users to stream more than 200 films from
Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures
Classics and others. The new app is free.

Teledyne Names DARPA Vet As New VP
----
Thousand Ooaks-based Teledyne Scientific & Imaging, the research arm
of Teledyne Technologies, announced this morning that it has named Dr.
Lisa Porter as a Senior Vice President, in charge of technology
commercialization efforts, technical operations, and general
management. Porter was the first director of the Intelligence Advanced
Research Projects Activity (IARPA) in the Office of the Director of
National Intelligence, and also served at the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) and Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA). Teledyne Scientific provides research and advanced
technology in compound semiconductors, materials, optics and
information sciences, to both internal and external customers,
including DARPA.

OptumRx Plans Hiring In Mission Valley
----
OptumRx, a pharmacy benefits management company which is a unit of
UnitedHealth Group, said Friday that it has set up a new, pharmacy
order processing facility in Mission Valley, and is expecting to hire
250 at the new location. The facility will handle mail order
prescription processing for OptumRx. The company said the new jobs are
part of more than 1,000 new jobs in the state.

Modern Meadow Gets Funding For 3D, Printed Meat
----
Modern Meadow, a firm whose founders were previously co-founders of
San Diego's Organovo, has scored funding to make manufactured, 3D
printed meat a reality. The funding came from Breakout Labs and The
Thiel Foundation, Breakout Labs said Thursday. Modern Meadow is
looking to developing "high value, food grade animal
protein"--including meat and hide--using 3D bioprinting technology.
Modern Meadow has received a grant of $350,000 from Breakout Labs,
which is part of the Thiel Foundation, and is aimed at funding "the
next generation" of scientific exploration. The foundation was founded

Amazon Studios Options Children's Series
----
Amazon Studios, the Los Angeles production arm of Amazon.com, said
Thursday that it has optioned two new children's series. The
firm--which has been ramping efforts in Hollywood to produce content
specifically for Amazon's streaming video services--said it has
optioned "Gortimer Gibbon's Life on Normal Street" created by David
Anaxagoras, and "Javi and the Treehouse Club" by Federico Badia. The
two children's series come on top of three, existing comedy series the
firm recently optioned. All of the projects are part of a
crowd-sourced effort to find scripts that the firm can turn into
exclusive content for Amazon. Amazon offers up video streaming as part
of its Amazon Prime service.
