Insights and Opinions: Can you just tell little business lies?
----
In our Insights and Opinions section this morning, we share an article
from Dave Berkus, author and angel investor--who just released his
book, BASIC BERKONOMICS--who asks: is it ever okay to tell a little
business lie?

"He's not in right now."  "I am going to the doctor at that time."  "I
paid only two dollars a unit to your competitor."  Whether not true
and used to avoid hurting someone's feelings, or whether used to gain
an advantage in a negotiation, these little business lies are
acceptable because they achieve their intended result without actually
hurting the other party.  Right?

Wrong – in the long run, even if apparently harmless at the moment. (More...)

Report: Cool Planet Seeking $100M For Biofuel Plant
----
What's behind that report this morning by Cool Planet Energy Systems
and progress on its ability to produce $1.50 per gallon gasoline from
biofuels? According to a report from GigaOm this morning, an effort to
raise $100M to build out its first biofuels facility. CEO Howard
Janzen told the publication that the firm hopes to start delivering
its fuel from its facility in 2014. Cool Planet Energy is backed by
Electric, Google Ventures, BP, ConocoPhillips, NRG and Constellation
Energy.

Nirvanix Wins In Indiana
----
Nirvanix, the provider of enterprise cloud storage services, said
today that it has been selected by the Independent Colleges of Indiana
to provide its cloud storage for its members. Nirvanix said it will
provide backup for the 31 private higher education institutions which
are part of the Indiana group. Financial impact of the deal was not
disclosed. Nirvanix said the deal is expected to grow to hundreds of
terabytes of storage within the next 12 months. Nirvanix is a provider
of cloud storage services, and has been focused on enterprise backup
and data storage.

Tradesy Takes On Women's Clothing Resale, Gets $1.5M in Funding
----
Tradesy, a new website and mobile app developed by Recycled Bride's
Tracy DiNunzio, is launching Wednesday, with $1.5M in funding from
Rincon Venture Partners, 500 Startups, Dany Levy (DailyCandy), Daher
Capital, Bee Partners, Double M Capital and Launchpad LA. The Los
Angeles-based startup has developed a service which makes it easy for
women to take and sell their clothing, even handling returns and
shipping. DiNunzio built Recycled Bride into a hugely popular
marketplace for women to buy and selling wedding related fashions; the
new effort, Tradesy, builds on that effort and expands the company
across a much wider marketplace. In an interview, DiNunzio said the
funding allows the already profitable company to build a much larger
business. Among the features of Tradesy are inclusion of shipping,
packaging, and insurance in the pricing of items; hassle free returns;
and pricing recommendations. The service even helps fill out product
descriptions for users, who only have to submit a photo of their item
to get it listed.

Cool Planet Energy Systems Claims Fuel Breakthrough
----
Camarillo-based Cool Planet Energy Systems, which is developing a
system for converting biomass into high octane gasoline, claimed today
that it believes it can produce high octane gasoline at the cost of
$1.50 per gallon, without the need for government subsidies. The firm
claims its process produces a carbon negative fuel, and is currently
being tested in a field trial at Google, in addition to being tested
at the company's headquarters in Camarillo. Cool Planet said its
testing at Google used a blend of 5% of its carbon negative fuel,
blended with 95 percent regular gasoline. Cool Planet Energy is backed
by Electric, Google Ventures, BP, ConocoPhillips, NRG and
Constellation Energy. The firm said the byproduct of its biofuels
process is activated carbon.

SGN Names Yguado President
----
Los Angeles-based game developer >SGN announced this morning that it
has named Josh Yguado as President of the company. Yguado is one of
the co-founders of SGN, and was previously in charge of game
development at the firm. He also served at Fox, serving as Vice
President of Business Development, where SGN said he worked on the
acquisition of MySpace and the launch of Hulu. Yguado also has served
at MTV/Nickelodeon and Univision. SGN is a developer of social games
on Facebook, plus mobile games on iOs and Android. The firm is headed
by former MySpace founder Chris DeWolfe.

Isis Pharmaceuticals Earns $1.1M From Alnylam
----
Carlsbad-based pharmaceuticals developer Isis Pharmaceuticals said
Tuesday afternoon that it will receive $1.1M from Alnylam
Pharmaceuticals, as a resutl of upfront fees from Alnylam's
collaboration with Genzyme. Isis said the additional payments from
Alnylam bring its total earned from the company this year to $2.7M.
Isis reported a payment in August from Alnylam.

Independa Gets $1M In Angel Funding
----
San Diego-based Independa, the provider of technology which helps to
connect and remotely monitor seniors, to help them live independently
longer, has raised $1M in an angel funding round. The funding was
first publicly disclosed in a regulatory filing last week. According
to reports, angels were the source of the new funding. Independa has
also previously raised funding from such investors as City Hill
Ventures and Miramar Venture Partners. Independa is in the midst of
rolling out applications which connect various remote care and health
monitoring products in to a central, cloud-based service; the company
recently announced a technology alliance with LG Electronics USA to
deploy Independa's Angela application through senior living
communities. Independa is headed by Kian Saneii.

Accelrys Buys Software Firm
----
San Diego-based Accelrys, which develops software for the life
sciences industry, has acquired a fellow software company, Aegis
Analytical. Accelrys said it paid $30M for Colorado based Aegis, which
it will use to bolster its products. Aegis develops software used in
the lab-to-commercialization processes, for quality control, and to
reduce compliance risk. Accelrys will retain "key" members of the
Aegis management team, as well as Aegis employees.

FatCloud Accelerates .NET Application Development, Backed by Elevator Labs
----
FatCloud, a new startup developing a .NET-focused,
platform-as-a-service (PaaS) development platform, said Tuesday that
it has launched it services, helping developers to deliver their .NET
applications. The firm--which is backed by Elevator Labs--said it
helps provide scale-out processing, data management, and
availability/redundancy for .NET applications, using a cluster/grid of
servers to help scale those apps. The new company is headed by Ian
Miller, and is backed by startup incubator Elevator Labs. The company
said it already has a number of customers, including Cricket
Wireless's Muve Music streaming service. Miller has previously served
at such companies as IBM, Platform Computing, Cray Inc., PolyServe and
Hewlett-Packard.

ACTIVE Network Wins Canadian Deal
----
ACTIVE Network, the developer of software-as-a-service for managing
sports and other activity registrations, reported yesterday that it
has won a deal in Saskatchewan, Canada. The firm said that the
Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment is automating its hunting,
trapping and angling licensing using its software. Financial impact of
the win was not disclosed. ACTIVE Network says its software is used to
process more than 37 million hunting and fishing licenses annually.
