How Enervee Is Making Shopping For Products Energy Smart, with Matthias Kurwig
----
Are you someone who'd like to save money, energy, and maybe the
environment while shopping for your new television, appliance, or
other electronic product? If so, how do you figure out what the better
choice is when you're making those purchase decisions? In a bid to try
to make it easier for consumers to figure that out, Enervee
(www.enervee.com) recently rolled out a new tool to provide an
"Enervee Score" to help rate products on their energy efficiency and
cost--and is now trying to get manufacturers, retailers, and others to
adopt its tool. We spoke with CEO and founder Matthias Kurwig on the
idea behind the startup, and how he's applying his experience as COO
of Neo@Ogilvy to his new Santa Monica startup.

What is Enervee?

Matthias Kurwig: Enervee is the world's first, personal energy
efficiency scoring platform. What we do (More...)

Lowercase Capital Boots Up New LA Investment Fund
----
Another, Silicon Valley investor--Chris Sacca--has his eyes on
investments in Los Angeles, saying that his super angel fund,
Lowercase Capital, has just hired a full time director in Los Angeles
to make investments in local startups. The news came at a PandoDaily
event Thursday evening. Sacca's apparently has only one Southern
California investment so far, an investment earlier this year in Big
Frame. Sacca was previously Head of Special Iniviatives at Google,
before he became a very active angel investor, with investments in
such companies as Facebook, Bit.ly, Kickstarter, Twitter, Uber,
Photobucket, Twilio, and others. Sacca did not say how large of a fund
he is dedicating to Los Angeles investments.

International Rectifier To Shut El Segundo Plant In March
----
El Segundo-based International Rectifier, a manufacturer of analog,
digital, and mixed signal ICs, said it expects to close its El Segundo
based fabrication facility by the end of March, 2013. International
Rectifier had announced the move in August. IR is also downsizing its
Newport, Wales fabrication facility. International Rectifier said the
cuts are expected to save it approximately $40M a year, when
completed. International Rectifier did not say how many employees are
being cut in the move.

United Online: FTD Split Expected By August 2013
----
Woodland Hills-based United Online, the hybrid Internet Service
Provider and flower delivery service (via FTD), reported yesterday in
its quarterly results that it now expects to spin off FTD as an
independent, publicly traded company by August of 2013. United Online
also said it is looking at "strategic alternatives" for its other
businesses. United Online had said in August that it was looking to
split the two businesses. United Online owns Memory Lane, Classmates,
MyPoints, NetZero, and Juno.

NewEgg Kicks Off Early Holiday Shopping Season
----
It looks like holiday shopping season has officially launched, at
least for electronic e-commerce retailer NewEgg, which said Thursday
that it has launched its "Black November" deals, offering up sales on
popular products such as laptop, ultrabooks, tablets, televisions,
cameras, computer components and video games. NewEgg also said it will
launch a new program which will provide a lowest price guarantee on
products purchase from November 1st through December 24th, where it
will refund the difference if a customer purchases and item and finds
that same item at certain online retailers for less for a lower price.
NewEgg is bypassing the traditional holiday sales launch on Black
Friday, where retailers have usually kicked off the season with extra
low prices and door busting offers. NewEgg is based in the City of
Industry, and quietly reached over $2 billion in sales, and is one of
Southern California's biggest e-commerce retailers. NewEgg also
launched sales on November 1st last year.

Club W Doubles Down On Accelerators With Investment From 500Startups
----
Club W, the personalized wine subscription service at AmplifyLA, has
doubled down with accelerators, and is part of a new class of startups
announced by 500Startups earlier this week. 500Startups said that
ClubW--founded by Xander Oxman, Mark Lynn, Geoff McFarlane--was
selected as part of its fifth class of accelerator companies.
500Startups invests between $25,000 and $250,000 in startups selected
by the group, which usually work with the accelerator to help hone
their business. In this case, the company apparently has added
500Startups but continues to work with AmplifyLA. ClubW has operations
both at AmplifyLA in Venice, as well as in Denver. The company was one
of two to connect with 500Startups latest class, the other being Los
Angeles-based Chewse, which helps groups order out from restaurants.

ZapMobi Takes On Mobile Websites
----
Zapmobi, which is based in Los Angeles, said Thursday that it has
launched a new service which helps users create scalable, mobile
websites that run on thousands of mobile devices. The new service said
it has created a point, click, and drag mobile website builder which
makes it easy for users to serve up mobile pages. The firm said it
offers up free and premium subscription plans. Zapmobi is headed by
Charlie Fallman.

Fisker Automotive Offers Up Parking Lot For Hurricane Recovery
----
Hurricane Sandy may have kicked the auto firm while it was down, but
Fisker Automotive is fighting back by offering up the parking lot of
its Wilmington, Delaware automotive plant as a headquarters location
for utility crews looking to reconnect power on the East coast. Fisker
said it is providing a location for over 350 personnel manning 300
utility and tree-trimming trucks associated with Delmarva Power, as a
home base for power and road restoration efforts. Anaheim-based
Fisker Automotive has a factory in Delaware--a former plant for
GM--working on its future electric vehicles.

Chewse Joins 500 Startups
----
Silicon valley startup incubator program 500 Startups announced its
latest batch of startups Wednesday, with a surprise: a local, Santa
Monica firm among the fifth batch of companies being backed by the
accelerator. 500 Startups said that Santa Monica-based Chewse, which
is developing a marketplace for groups to easily order food together,
has joined the accelerator, which invests between $25,000 and $250,000
in Internet startups, and helps them get funded and off the ground.
Chewse was founded by Tracy Lawrence and Jeff Schenck. Schenck was
formerly at Adly. The idea of group ordering might be familiar to
those in the Santa Monica startup scene; now defunct BetterWorks had
offered a similar feature which let employees of companies put in and
coordinate individual orders from restaurants for delivery to the
office.

Hurricane Sandy Provides More Woes For Fisker Automotive
----
It looks like Hurricane Sandy didn't limit its damage to the East
Coast. The Hurricane apparently has inflicted its damage on Southern
California hybrid automaker Fisker Automotive, after surging water
from the storm caused sixteen of Fisker's Karma luxury hybrids to go
up in flames in Port Newark, New Jersey. The Irvine-based startup's
cars--which were at a shipping facility awaiting delivery--caught fire
after being submerged by the storm. A photo of the destroyed cars was
posted by Jalopnik. Exact cause of the fires have not been determined.
Although no automobile is hurricane and water proof--there are
undoubtedly hundreds if not thousands of cars now headed for the scrap
heap due to Hurricane Sandy--the fires can't be good for Fisker, which
has had a number of spontaneous ignition with its automobiles come to
light over the last year.

Boingo Wins Dallas Love Field
----
Boingo Wireless, the Wi-Fi hotspot network operator, has scored a win
at the Dallas Love Field airport, the company said Thursday. The Los
Angeles company said that it will will install, manage and operate
neutral host Wi-Fi and DAS networks for the airport as part of a
modernization initiative. Financial impact of the win was not
announced. Boingo already operates Wi-Fi networks at a significant
number of airports worldwide, though it has yet to get a chance at
business at hometown airport LAX. Boingo said its enhanced wireless
services will launch in Q1 2013 as part of the opening of a remodeled
Love Field complex, with further rollout through 2014.

Invested.in Gets $830K More In Seed Funding
----
Invested.in, the developer of a web-based platform for crowdfunding
which is part of AmplifyLA, is announced Thursday that it has raised
$830,000 more in a seed funding round. The round was led by Kamran
Pourzanjani, the founder of PriceGrabber who is now head of
Bestcovery. The round also included Siemer Ventures, Canyon Creek
Capital, Karlin Ventures, Gordon Crawford, David Carter, Mark
Schwartz, Michael Liou, Chairul Irawan, Chris Grey, Steven Roussey,
Alan Stern, Irv Weintraub, Steve Reich, Mark Kolokotrones, Brad
Schwartz, Terry Kay and Amplify LA. Invested.in, which is based in Los
Angeles, is headed by Alon Goren. The firm's platform has been used by
nonprofits, charities, individuals, and businesses to power
crowdfunding for all kinds of projects.

Atara Biotherapeutics Gets Funding From Amgen, KPCB
----
Thousand Oaks-based Amgen and venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield &
Byers have put their backing behind a new, Westlake Village based drug
development firm, Atara Biotherapeutics, in an unusual spinout of
technology from the biotech giant. According to Amgen and KPCB, Atara
Biotherapeutics will have licenses to six Amgen assets, in various
stages of development, ranging from preclinical to Phase 1. Financial
details of the funding were not announced. The move is unusual in that
Amgen--unlike many of its biotech competitors in other regions--for
holding its technology close to the vest, and not spinning out
technology from the company. Atara will have facilities both near
Amgen's Thousand oaks campus, in addition to operations in the Bay
Area. Amgen and KPCB said Atara will focus on treatments for patients
with chronic diseases in therapeutic areas including nephrology and
oncology. The new company will be headed by Isaac Ciechanover, M.D., a
former partner at KPCB.
