E&Y announced its winners this morning, which included Joe Kiani, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Irvine's Masimo Corporation (Life sciences); Gary Jabara, CEO and President of wireless infrastructure developer Mobilitie, LLC in Newport Beach (Real Estate); and Mike Morhaime, CEO, President, and Co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment (Technology). Broadcom Powers Wii U ---- Irvine-based Broadcom said today that its semiconductors are being used to power the wireless connectivity in Nintendo's new Wii U. Broadcom says its chips are being used to provide Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC capability to the new Nintendo game controller, including handling the transfer of video and audio between the Wii U console and Wii U GamePad controller; Bluetooth connections to legacy games and peripherals; and wireless connectivity to the Internet. Broadcom said its BCM43362, BCM43237 and BCM4319 Wi-Fi chips; its NFC:BCM20792 chip; and its BCM20702 Bluetooth chip are all being used in the Wii U and shipping in production quantities. Car Town Debuts On iOS ---- Long Beach-based Cie Games, the developer of the Facebook social game Car Town, said Friday that it has launched a new app on iOS. The company said that Car Town Street, which lets players build and "cruise" with cars in a town, is free and runs on iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. The iPhone app was launched in conjunction with Sony and Nitto Tire. Teledyne Wins Lab Services Contract With Dow Chemical ---- Thousand Oaks-based Teledyne Technologies said Friday that it has scored a commercial laboratory services contract, via its subsidiary, Teledyne Brown Engineering, with The Dow Chemical Company. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Teledyne said the three year Lab and Office Facility Management contract is part of a strategic services partnership with Dow, and involves on-site and off-site management and support research services at Dow Chemical research facilities in Midland, Mich., Freeport, Texas, and Spring House, Pa. Peregrine Ramps RFIC Production ---- San Diego-based Peregrine Semiconductor, which develops radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), said today along with Korean semiconductor firm MagnaChip Semiconductor, that Magnachip is expanding production of Peregrine's UltraCMOS RFIC product line. The two said that the manufacturing ramp for the chips is the fastest in MagnaChip's history. The two did not disclose actual shipping volumes, but said the rampup comes to meet "large demand" for Peregrine's UltraCMOS products. CODA Automotive Dangles Free Home Charger To Customers ---- In an incentive to potential customers looking at an electric car, Los Angeles-based CODA Automotive said it will provide a free, home charger to customers in California. The company said California residents who purchase a new, 2012 CODA electric vehicle will receive a free, home GE WattStation Level 2 EV charger, plus installation by Mr. Electric. The company said the charger is worth approximately $2,000. CODA said the promotion runs only for a couple of weeks, through December 2nd. ArtKive Raises $500K ---- The Kive Co., the mobile applications developer behind ARTKIVE, an app which helps parents save their kids' artwork, and turn that art into photo books or keepsakes, has raised $500,000 in a funding round, according to the company. The funding came from local angels, as well as from Amplify. The firm, which is led by Jedd Gold, launched its app in September. The company's service and app solves the issue that parents have of trying to figure out what to do with their childrens' prolific artwork. Gold said that Jeff Lipp, a mentor at Amplify, has joined as Chairman of the company. The company reports it has surpassed 250,000 images of kids' art uploaded in just 10 weeks. Hulu Highlights Video Games ---- Online video streaming site Hulu said Friday that it has launched a new section to highlight video game trailers, through its new Video Games hub on the site. The new hub shows HD trailers of games, game play videos, reviews, and more on releases. Hulu said the new section is available on PCs today, and will roll out to Hulu Plus enabled devices over the next few months. http://www.hulu.com/videogames JibJab Powers Amazon Video Gift Cards ---- Los Angeles-based JibJab is powering a new line of video-based gift cards for ecommerce giant Amazon.com. Amazon.com announced its new Amazon Video Gift Cards Friday morning, letting useres create free, personalized cards using JibJab Starring You videos, which feature a photo of yourself, your friends, or family directly in the gift card video. Financial details of the win by JibJab were not announced. Amazon has rolled out dozens of videos, including gift cards for winter holidays, birthday, graduation, and more. JibJab was founded by Gregg and Evan Spiridellis. The Amazon gift card deal looks to be among the farthest reaching deals to use JibJab's Starring You technology to date. http://www.amazon.com/giftcards-video Laffster's Mock The Vote Hits Android ---- Mock The Vote, the mobile, political satire application developed by Venice-based Laffster, has just launch on Android, giving political news fans another platform to get the latest, humorous take on politics. Laffster, headed by Daniel Altman, has been applying algorithms to the world of digital content, surfacing the most interesting and timely political news from its partners, presented in a humorous fashion. The firm told users today in an email that the new Android app now has "20% more CIA sex scandals". The Mock The Vote app for Android is available on Google Play; the firm released an iPhone version earlier this year. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.laffster.mockvote&hl=en_GB Wallaby Financial Debuts iPhone App ---- Wallaby Financial, the personal finance startup out of MuckerLab, debuted a new, iPhone application Friday, which the firm says will help consumers make the best decision on which credit card to use. The free app helps users choose among their multiple credit cards, to figure out which ones to use to make the most of a transaction. Wallaby Financial is headed by Matthew Goldman, and is backed by FF Angel, WI Harper Group, Quotidian Ventures and Karlin Ventures. The app provides a function similar to Wallaby's card, which the company is in the process of issuing, which will automatically charge the optimal credit card in a users' wallet. The company says the new app will help users make the most of rewards for hotel stays, airline points, or cash back from their credit cards. SkinMedica Acquired By Allergan For $375M ---- Carlsbad-based SkinMedica, the developer of aesthetic medicine products, is being acquired by Irvine-based Allergan in a $350M deal, the two said Friday. Allergan said it will buy SkinMedica $350M up front, plus up to $25M based on future sales goals. The deal does not include the SkinMedica Colorescience aesthetic make-up line, which the two said will be spun out by SkinMedica into a new business. SkinMedica was venture backed by Apax Partners, Domain Associates, EuclidSR Partners, HealthCare Ventures, Montagu Newhall Associates, Montreux Equity Partners, Perseus-Soros BioPharmaceutical Fund, Split Rock Partners, St. Paul Venture Capital, and Versant Ventures.
