Essentially, it's a community space where you can (More...) http://bit.ly/V6hjjt --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MySpace Debuts New Timberlake Design ---- MySpace, the online social networking site which is now owned by Specific Media, has finally rolled out its new, Justin Timberlake-inspired web design, in conjunction with the release of a new single from Timberlake and JAY Z. The new design--which has been in limited beta since fall of last year--is part of an overhaul of the site being made by Specific Media since its purchase of MySpace in 2011. The new interface includes full screen graphics, modern styling, right left scrolling, Pinterest-style tagging and conversations, as well as other slick UI updates. The new MySpace has been fighting a somewhat uphill battle to gain back relevancy and overcome the negative bias of the technology press to the brand. Source Scientific Acquired By BIT Analytical Instruments ---- Irvine-based Source Scientific, a provider of outsourced engineering, manufacturing, and services for the medical and diagnostic instruments industry, has been acquired by BIT Analytical Instruments, the firms said this morning. Financial details of the buy were not disclosed. BIT Analytical Instruments is based in Schwalbach, Germany. BIT Analytical Instruments previously owned 50 percent of Source Scientific, and the companies said the acquisition was part of a planned, five year transition to full ownership. Nimble Snags Salesforce Vet ---- Santa Monica-based Nimble, the developer of social relationship management software, reported yesterday that it has tapped a Salesforce.com veteran to head up its content and product marketing strategy. The firm said that Alyson Stone, who formerly served in the same role at Salesforce's Desk.com division, will lead expansion of its content and education strategy. Nimble said that Stone also served at Assistly, in addition to having over 20 years of experience at startups and large companies. Nimble develops cloud-based, contact management software which incorporates features and links into social services, and was founded by Goldmine creator Jon Ferrara. NantHealth Raises $6.1M ---- NantHealth, the advanced, next-generation healthcare services startup which is part of NantWorks, the startup incubation effort of billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, has raised $6.1M in a funding round, according to a regulatory filing by the firm Monday. The filing indicates the funding is part of an ongoing $9.197M funding for the company. Details on investors and the funding have not been announced by the company. NantHealth, which is based in Los Angeles, is apparently working to provide advanced, next-generation healthcare services by using fiber networks, cloud computing, and wireless technology, based on an earlier announcement by the firm in October. The company's existing investors include Verizon Investments. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=47872 Pelican Products Buys Minnesota Thermal Science ---- Torrance-based Pelican Products, the manufacturer of protective cases, flashlights and portable lighting systems, and other products, has acquired Minnesota Thermal Science (MTS), a developer of temperature controlled packaging solutions. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Pelican said that MTS will merge with its existing BioPharma division, and help bolster its products for the pharmaceutical and life science industries. DFJ Frontier, Anthem Boost Janrain ---- Two local venture capital funds here in Southern California have backed Janrain, a developer of user management software tools used by websites to better manage registration and site visitors. According to Janrain, it has raised $33M in funding from Millennium Technology Value Partners, Split Rock Partners, Epic Ventures, and salesforce.com, as well as existing investors Emergence Capital, RPM Ventures, DFJ Frontier and Anthem Venture Partners. Janrain said the funding will go towards growth, after it more than doubled its revenues in 2012. The firm said the funding came from Bessemer Venture Partners and DAG Ventures, and will go towards sales and marketing. Convertro develops a non-cookie-based tracking technology that helps marketers better track and analyze their customers, and helps to better target and optimize ad campaigns. Zwelling is a serial entrepreneurs who has had some major successes, including EchoSign (acquired by Adobe) and YLighting (acquired by private equity). Convertro raised $5M in a Series A in 2009.
