Space Exploration Technologies, the commercial rocket and spaceflight firm based in Hawthorne, and headed by technology mogul Elon Musk, has seen huge success in its goal of developing its rocket and spacecraft technology to deliver supplies--and eventually, people--to space. (More...) http://bit.ly/XDgl96 BAROnova Gets $27.3M For Weight Loss Device ---- Goleta-based medical device developer BAROnova announced this morning that it has raised a big, $27.3M funding round to fund clinical trails for its weight loss device. The firm said the Series C funding was led by Sante Ventures and Boston Scientific Corporation, and also included ONSET Ventures, Highland Capital Partners and Arboretum Ventures, and Lumira Capital. BAROnova said those funds will go towards a stufy of its TransPyloric SHuttle weight loss technology, a mechanical device which the firm says is expected to slow the digestion process and create a sensation of fullness. The device is implanted endoscopically in patients through an outpatient procedure. The firm said it has expand its Wi-Fi testing product, IxVeriWave, to specifically test for critical applications running on Wi-Fi networks. The firm said the new product comes as health care devices, such as defibrillators, infusion pumps and EKG monitors, are increasingly being used across Wi-Fi networks in healthcare settings. Ixia said its product lets users simulate live networks, prompt devices to roam, and measures key performance indicators to harden those networks. Vitesse Debuts New Gigabit Ethernet Cores ---- Camarillo-based Vitesse Semiconductor, the developer of packet processing and networking chips, said this week that it has debuted a new set of Gigabit Ethernet (GE) IP cores. Pfanzelter was previously a Senior Vice President at Kellogg Company, and also served at Oscar Mayer Foods and Keebler. The firm said that while at Kellogg, he represented representing the combined manufactured brands of Oscar Mayer, General Foods and Kraft Foods. Pfanzelter also serves on the board of Doctor’s Associates, the parent company of Subway Restaurants, and is on the Advisory Board of Directors for Wrigley Foods. PURE Bioscience is developing silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) antimicrobials. Receptos Names CFO ---- San Diego-based Receptos, a developer of treatments for immune and metabolic disease, said this week that it has named Graham Cooper as its Chief Financial Officer. Cooper has previously served as CFO of Geron Corporation and Orexigen Therapeutics. Receptos said that Cooper was SVP and CFO of Orexigen, through $300M in funding, including an $80M IPO. He also has served at Deutsche Bank and Deloitte & Touche. ArtKive Gets Vator People's Choice Award ---- The Kive Company, the Los Angeles startup which runs ArtKive, a service which helps parents take the artwork and schoolwork of their kids into the digital age, has scored the People's Choice Award at this week's Vator Splash SF. ArtKive was among a number of companies competing in Vator's pitch competition in San Francisco. At least one other local startup was recognized in the awards, Younity, the unified file storage service which was part of MuckerLab, was a finalist in the competition.
