The new studio comes in conjunction with a new partnership announced with CNN, around a new online channel, CNNBuzzFeed. BuzzFeed said the new studio will grow to 30 people in the new few months, and will be led by Ze Frank. The company said the newly constructed studio will also include a coffee shop and store. olloclip Debuts New iPhone App ---- Huntington Beach-based olloclip, the developer of the lens systems for the iPhone and iPod touch, is expanding into software, saying today that it has launched a new photo and video app designed to enhance the company's clip-on-lenses. According to olloclip, the new photo and video app is free, and offers up editing tools for its lenses, including adjusting fisheye, wide-angle and macro photos captured with its lenses. olloclip's lens system gives iPhone and iPod touch users the ability to capture photos by mounting a clip over those devices' camera. Broadcom Rolls Out Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Chips ---- Irvine-based Broadcom rolled out two new chips today, including both a single-chip Wi-Fi product, and a Bluetooth system-on-a-chip. Broadcom's new Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip is part of its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) portfolio, and is aimed at low power consumer products. The company's new Bluetooth Smart chip is aimed at use in Android-based smartphones and tablets. Broadcom said that both chips are designed to help boost the "Internet of Things" market. The new Wi-Fi SOC, the BCM4390, is sampling now to early access customers and is aimed at reaching full production in Q4. The new Bluetooth chip, the BCM20732, is already in full production now. Lastline Debuts Malware Analysis Software ---- Santa Barbara-based Lastline, a developer of malware defense software for business, said today that it has debuted a new product. Lastline said its Previct analyst software is a malware analysis system, which provides threat analysis and forensic teams with visibility into malicious components. Lastline said its new software is build on the Anubis and Wepawet platforms. Pricing on the new product was not announced. MaxLinear Wins Reference Design With STMicroelectronics ---- Carlsbad-based radio-frequency and mixed signal integrated circuits developer MaxLinear reported a design win with STMicroelectronics this morning, as part of a set-top box reference design aimed at Latin America. MaxLinear said its tuner-modular components are part of a design aimed at digital television efforts in Latin America, and includes an integrated set-top box and software platform. MaxLinear's ISDB-T tuner-demodulator chip is being used in the design. Amgen Ties With Astellas To Tackle Japan ---- Thousand Oaks-based biotech Amgen announced today that it has linked with Astellas Pharma, in a deal to reach the Japanese market with new medicines. According to the two, they are in a strategic alliance where they will provide new medicines to address the unmet medical needs of Japanese patients. The two said the first part of the alliance will focus on the co-development and co-commercialization in Japan of five Amgen pipeline medicines, including four biologics and one small molecule. Those biopharmaceuticals are targeted at treatment of cardiovascular and bone diseases and cancer. The companies will also create a Tokyo-based joint venture, Amgen Astellas BioPharma KK. Financial details of the strategic alliance were not disclosed. BitAngels Raises $6.7M For Bitcoin Investments ---- A new, angel investment group, BitAngels, said Tuesday morning that it has raised $6.7M in funding to invest in Bitcoin startups--and also has launched three, physical locations to help incubate companies in the sector. The angel investment group--co-founded by Michael Terpin, a well known figure in the Los Angeles technology community--said it has more than 60 angels helping to support the effort. Bitcoin is the electronic currency which has caught fire in the last few months, an alternative currency to money printed by different countries, and not governed by any country or central authority. Terpin is very bullish on Bitcoin, and has been seeking Los Angeles startups with interest in the sector. http://bit.ly/110BNXr Twitter Ramps Music Efforts--and Jobs--In LA ---- It looks like Twitter is ramping efforts in Los Angeles, and is seeking a new Head of Music Partnership to lead a team based here to work with musicians, labs, radio stations, and digital music portals. According to a job posting by Twitter, the company is seeking someone to help it make Twitter valuable to the talent as well as to the operations and strategy of music labels, digital music services and events.
