Banyan Biomarkers Gets $6M For Detecting Traumatic Brain Injury
----
Carlsbad, California- and Alachua, Florida-based Banyan Biomarkers has
raised $6M in a Series A funding, to go towards development of a
diagnostic test for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Source of the
funding was not disclosed. Banyan Biomarkers said it is developing a
blood test which can be used to diagnose traumatic brain injury in
patients. The firm said it is currently in the midst of a 2,000
patient, clinical trail funded via a $26.3M contract with the United
States Department of Defense. Banyan Biomarkers said its diagnostics
test will make it easier for physicians to triage and diagnose TBI.

Sonos Ties Into Hype Machine
----
Sonos, the developer of the user-friendly, multi-room music systems
and related software, said this week that it has tied intoHype
Machine, a music discovery tool which searches through music blogs to
identify the trending songs and artists people are talking about.
According to Sonos, users can access their Hype Machine account and
play trakcs, by linking into the Sonos Labs section on the Sonos
controller. Details of the deal between the companies were not
announced.

Clearlake Capital Buys Electronic Data Discovery Firm
----
Santa Monica-based private equity investor Clearlake Capital said this
morning that it has acquired Inventus, a provider of electronic data
discovery for global law firms. Financial terms of the buy were not
disclosed. Inventus is based in Chicago. Inventus will remain
headquartered in Chicago, led by current CEO Trevor Campion. Clearlake
said its investment group also included Cera Group, a private
investment firm based in New York.

Ceres Names New Board Member
----
Thousand Oaks-based Ceres, which develops agricultural biotech for the
energy crop market, announced today that it has named Daniel Glat to
its board of directors. Glat comes from Glat & Associates, an
agribusiness consultancy in Brazil, and also has served at Pioneer
Hi-Bred International/Dupont. Glat replaces Douglas Suttles, who the
firm said is stepping down from the board. Ceres is developing strains
of sweet sorghum, high-biomass sorghum, switchgrass and miscanthus
specifically tailored for conversion to biofuels.

Kurion Names New CEO
----
Irvine-based nuclear waste remediation technology developer Kurion has
named a new CEO. Kurion said this morning that it has appointed
William "Bill" Gallo as its CEO, with current CEO Ralph DiSibio
remaining as Executive Chairman. Gallo had joined Kurion in March as
its Chief Operating Officer, having previously served at AREVA Solar.
Gallo is based in San Jose. Kurion develops nuclear and hazardous
waste management technology.

Leads360 Becomes Velocify
----
Sales automation software developer Leads360 said Wednesday that it
has renamed the firm to Velocify, saying the new name better reflects
its focus on "high-velocity" sales environments. The firm, which is
headed by Nick Hedges, develops cloud-bsaed, sales automation and lead
scoring sytsems, used to help sales organizations better prioritize
leads in an automated manner. The firm said its product is being used
by companies such as Allstate, Royal Bank of Scotland, USAA,
Nationstar Mortgage and State Farm. Leads360 is venture backed by
Rustic Canyon Partners and Volition Capital.

Gobbler Gains $500,000 More
----
Los Angeles-based Gobbler, the operator of an online backup and file
storage service for creative projects, has raised $500,000 in a new
round of funding, according to a regulatory filing by the firm today.

Fab.com Investment, Faith In Team, Pays Off For Baroda
----
Being a seed investor is a tough job--being early to a company doesn't
necessarily mean you'll see a return--and it's usually a long road to
see any reward. But, it looks like being a seed investor has paid off
for at least one local investor, Baroda Ventures, the venture capital
investment fund owned by GeoCities founder David Bohnett. Baroda was a
very early investor in Fab.com, which just raised $150M in funding at

Dun & Bradstreet Credibility's Stibel Among Ernst & Young Award Winners
----
Ernst & Young has announced the Los Angeles winners of its
Entrepreneur of the Year awards, naming at least one technology exec
to the winner's list, Dun & Bradstreet Credibility CEO Jeff Stibel to
one of seven awards. E&Y's list this year included a number of
finalists from the LA technology sector, including Dinesh Ravishanker
of Callfire; Demian Sellfors of Media Temple; Rick Stollmeyer of
MINDBODY; Tim Cadogan of OpenX; Loren Bendele of Savings.com; Walter
Driver of Scopely, and Jeff Green of The Trade Desk. Ernst & Young
runs its program every year to recognize high growth entrepreneurs.
Jeff Stibel is also an active angel investor in many Los Angeles
startups.

Marlin Equity Partners Combines Sycamore Networks, Coriant
----
Los Angeles-based private equity investor Marlin Equity Partners is
combining portfolio firms Sycamore Networks with Coriant, the company
said Wednesday morning. Sycamore was acquired by Marlin in January,
and Coriant--formerly a unit of Nokia--had been acquired by Marlin in
May. Marlin Equity Partners said it will rename Sycamore Networks as
Coriant America Inc. The new company will remain headquartered in
Chelmsford, Mass. Sycamore Networks is a developer of optical trnsport
products, including optical switches and gateways.

DreamHost Launches Conference, DreamCon
----
It's a rite of passage for most technology companies--getting to the
size where you have enough users, revenues, and market presence that
you can launch your own conference. Los Angeles-based hosting provider
DreamHost is the latest local company to hit that milestone, telling
its users that it has just booted up its own, user conference,
DreamCon, where it will provide presentations to software developers,
entrepreneurs, and more. The conference will include a keynote from
WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg. DreamHost said the conference will
run from August 1st through the 4rd.

Playsino Debuts Bingo World On Nook
----

Combat Gent Scores $1.84M For Men's Fashion Startup

Need a good suit, and don't know where to go? A new, Los Angeles
startup--Combat Gent--has just raised $1.84M to make finding a new
suit as easy as a mouse click. The new startup said yesterday that the
funding came from MHS Capital, VegasTechFund, Naxuri Capital,
Greycroft Partners, Blazer Ventures and Jake Bornstein of Flint &
Tinder. The new startup is an outspin of the Fashion Tech Accelerator
program. As part of the funding, the company said it has named Enrico
Beltramini--formerly of Gucci--as chairman of the board of the
company. Combat Gent offers up shirts, suits, ties, and denim to
online users.

ThousandEyes, Spawned At UCLA, Raises Funding From Sequoia

A new startup, which was created at the University of California, Los
Angeles (UCLA), has just raised a first funding round from Sequoia
Capital. ThousandEyes, created by two UCLA computer science Ph.D.'s,
said it raised $5.5M yesterday for its software for monitoring
cloud-based applications in enterprises. ThousandEyes was founded by
Mohit Lad, who received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA; his
co-founder is Ricardo Oliveira, who also received his Ph.D. in
Computer Science from UCLA. Both met while at school. The firm's
technology was created while the two were at UCLA, originally as
Oliviera's project, Cyclops, a network connectivity audit tool he
built as a graduate project. ThousandEyes is based in San Francisco.
