(More...) http://www.socaltech.com/factual_enhances_healthcare_data/s-0051816.html Cirro Finds $8M For Big Data Software ---- San Juan Capistrano-based Cirro, a developer of software for data access, exploration, and analysis, announced this morning that it has raised $8M in a Series A funding round. The round was led by Toba Capital, and also included Frost Venture Partners and Miramar Venture Partners. Cirro's CEO is Mark Theissen. The company said the new funds will go towards product development, sales, marketing, and scaling of its business. Cirro is one of the big data companies which was incubated out of Frost Venture Partners. Toba Capital is the new venture capital firm founded by former Quest Sofware CEO and Chairman Vinny Smith. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=52855 VIZIO Claims Win Against Patent Troll ---- Irvine-based electronics manufacturer VIZIO says it has won its tenth case against what it calls a "patent troll", after winning a summary judgement of invalidity and non-infringement on two patents held by Oplus Technologies, Ltd. last week. VIZIO said the legal win is the tenth successful fight against what are called Non-Practicing Entities (NPE) by the company. VIZIO has been on a big campaign against what it calls "extortion attempts" by NPEs, which typically buy up large collections of patents, and then look to force companies to pay them a licensing fee or face potential patent infringement suits. VIZIO has been on a public campaign against those NPEs, although VIZIO hasn't been a stranger to patent licensing activity itself. SolarReserve Names New CFO ---- Santa Monica-based utility scale solar power developer SolarReserve announced Tuesday that it has appointed a new Chief Financial Officer. According to SolarReserve, it has named Tim Rosenzweig to the position, to bolster its renewable energy and financing expertise. Rosenzweig was most recently CEO of Goldwind USA, a manufacturer of wind turbines. He also co-founded wind developer First Wind/UPC Wind, and served at a Nomura-backed private equity fund, GE Capital Market Services, and Lehman Brothers. Solar Reserve said it has $1.8 billion in large scale, solar energy projects under way worldwide. Dollar Shave Club Gets $12.0M More ---- Santa Monica-based Dollar Shave Club, the company that hit the scene with a viral launch video for its subscription razor e-commerce business, has $12.0M more in the bank, the company disclosed Tuesday. The firm's Series B funding round came from Venrock, Comcast Ventures, New World Ventures and Battery Ventures. Dollar Shave Club most recently expanded its line of products into the flushable wipe business, and apparently is planning further product expansion. The firm did not say if prior investors Andreessen Horowitz, Forerunner Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, or Shasta Ventures participated in the new funding. The company has now raised around $22.8M in funding. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=52854 Break Media, Alloy Digital To Merge ---- Los Angeles-based online content publisher Break Media and Alloy Digital said Tuesday that the two are merging to form a new, Internet video company called Defy Media. Financial terms of the merger were not announced. Variety said that the combined company will have more than $100M in revenues. A new, Los Angeles startup, Pheebo--started by two former Apple Store employees--said that it has launched a brand new app which looks to let users access their favorite videos from such sites as YouTube, Reddit, Vimeo, and other sites, all from a single place. The new app was created by former Apple retail employees Arthur Matiossian and Monte Flagg, who met while working at Apple store at The Grove. Shopzilla said the new coupon site consolidates a number of coupon offerings into a single brand. According to the company, it offers over 50,000 coupons from more than 6,400 stores, and includes features to make sure that the codes listed on the site work, by tapping into a network of verified buyers who have successfully used those coupons. Shopzilla explained that it had been beta testing the site under the name of Robot Oatmeal in the U.S., and Tada in the UK. http://www.tada.com CapLinked Adds Advisor From Deal Room Business ---- CapLinked, the developer of the cloud-based, deal room and business transactions service, said Tuesday that it has added a new advisor from virtual data room provider IntraLinks. CapLinked said that it has named Dave Curran as an advisor to its executive team, to help provide insight into the virtual data room area. Curran had been EVP Business and Legal Affairs at IntraLinks. According to Los Angeles-based CapLinked, Curran was involved in the technology when the technology was invented in the late 90's. CapLinked is venture backed by FF Angel, Hercules Growth Fund, Siemer Ventures, 500 Startups, and Peter Thiel, and has recently focused the company on the virtual deal room market. UTA Targets Early Stage Investments With New Hire ---- The United Talent Agency is ramping up its outreach to early stage, digital media companies, with a new hire from the Los Angeles technology industry. According to the United Talent Agency, it has hired Robyn Ward as part of its Digital Media practice, to work closely with its existing portfolio of early stage companies and help identify new investment, incubation and representation opportunities. The UTA has already been very active in approaching the startup commmunity, most recently backing the USC Viterbi Startup Garage with Kleiner Perkins. Ward is a startup veteran, having been involved in such local companies as DocStoc, Betterworks, and Glossi. Adly Gets New Investor ---- Los Angeles-based social advertising technology developer Adly announced Tuesday that it has added a new investor, with ties to professional athletes and celebrities. According to Adly, it has partnered with Legacy Growth Partners as its first celebrity investor, and will be working with the firm to reach out to professional athletes and celebrities. Financial details of the investment were not announced. Legacy Growth Partners says it helps professional athletes become successful entrepreneurs. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. iolo was owned by by equity firm Marlin Equity Partners. The two companies said the acquisition will expand the global distribution channels for iolo's products, plus bolster Phoenix's portfolio of products. Phoenix is a major provider of embedded BIOS and other products for the PC and tablet market. iolo was founded by Noah Rowles. SlimSurveys Launches New Product ---- SlimSurveys, the new startup headed by former TweetPhoto founder Sean Callahan, has launched a new product, aimed at collecting data from website visitors. According to the company, its new Customer Insights product lets website owners add a widget to their website, to help collect real-time, customer insights. The new product lets marketers and website owners run surveys in-line with their websites, without requiring developers to constantly interact with the website. The company's widgets show up in the lower right hand corner of a website and can be set to display all kinds of survey questions, which users can choose to answer by clicking on an icon.
