Insights: Why UBER Matters, A LOT
----
For today's Insights and Opinions article, where we regularly share
the thoughts and observations of Southern California's high tech
movers and shakers, we have an article from Ivan Nikkhoo of Siemer &
Associates:

"Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of
belief in freedom itself." - Milton Friedman

I was recently at the Le Web conference in Paris where Travis
Kalanick, the Cofounder and CEO of Uber was one of the speakers. It is
ironic that the idea for Uber was conceived in Paris, France, where
free markets and capitalism are under tremendous pressure.

What makes Uber is an extraordinarily important company? In one word,
freedom. Disintermediation is Internet’s biggest gift. Uber is one of
the best examples of how disintermediation can transform industries in
which unions, lobbyists, regulation, and bureaucracy have created
obstacles to progress, openness, and competitiveness. Which is

early-stage technology companies relevant to its business from across
the globe. This year, Qualcomm said it will award $100,000 each to the
top companies in China, Europe, India, Israel, Korea, Latin America
and North America, with one of those winners getting an additional
$150,000 in a convertible note financing after a pitch competition in
its "grand finals". Qualcomm said the deadline for the startup
competition this year is April 18th.

Washio Gets $2.25M For Laundry Pickup, Delivery
----
Los Angeles looks to be the center of the mobile-phone enabled,
personal services market, as Wash.io--a new startup--announced today
that it has raised $2.25M in a seed funding round. Wash.io offers up a
smartphone app-driven service which schedules laundry pickup and
delivery ala Uber. The funding came from Sherpa Ventures, AME Cloud
Ventures, Three Six Zero Group, Ashton Kutcher, Guy Oseary, and a long
list of other angel investors. The company is not the first
smartphone-meets-laundry startup in Los Angeles--that honor goes to
Naki Laundry. Wash.io currently offers up its laundry service in Los
Angeles and San Francisco, and contracts out to third party laundry
facilities for the actual laundry service.

Zingle Ramps Texting Service For Hotels
----
In a world where consumers use texting more than they actually talk to
someone on the phone, businesses have been notably slow to communicate
via texting with their customers. To solve that, a San Diego startup,
Zingle says it has been offering up a service to help connect
businesses with their customers via texting -- starting with the hotel
industry. (More...)

January 15, Santa Barbara -- MIT Enterprise Forum of the Central Coast
presents
"Water is the New Oil" Rain Cloud Computing: How Technology Can Help Solve
California's Perennial Water Woes. Willem Buiter, the chief economist at
megabank Citigroup, says that water isn't just the new oil, it's more
important than oil: "Water as an asset class will, in my view, become
eventually the single most important physical-commodity based asset class,
dwarfing oil, copper, agricultural commodities and precious metals." While
massive investments to develop and transport water supplies grab headlines
in California, there's a huge business opportunity that's rarely talked
about: Using technological innovation to stretch existing supplies
further. Imagine a world in which local water rights could be traded on a
daily or even hourly basis, lowering prices while managing supplies for
long-term sustainability. The technology exists,
and entrepreneurs such as Mark Kram are bringing it to market. Join the
Central Coast MIT Enterprise forum this Wednesday for a intriguing
discussion on the role of technology now and in the future in managing
