The company--which is in the midst of developing a reusable, rocket-powered vehicles for launching people into space--said the funding came from Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) of The Netherlands. As part of the funding, SXC is adding Michiel Mol and Mark Hoogendoorn to XCOR's board of directors. XCOR said it will use the new funding to help to bring its Lynx suborbital spaceplane to market. Vitesse said that Planet Technology Corporation is using its Ethernet switch technology and software, as part of a smart Ethernet switch. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Vitesse said that Planet Technology is using its SparX and E-StaX Ethernet switch technology and SMBStax software, for a managed Layer 2/Layer 3 Ethernet switch aimed at the SME, Enterprise, and Internet-of-Things market. MSC Software Used In Tidal Energy Project ---- Newport Beach-based MSC Software, which develops simulation and design software, said its software has been used in the design of what is the largest tidal turbine in the world. The company said its software was used by Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd (SRTP), in the Orkney Islands, for the rotor blade design and analysis in that project. Malauzai Software Gets $6.5M More For Banking Apps ---- Malauzai Software, a developer mobile banking apps for community financial institutions which has a number of its top executives located in Los Angeles, said this week that it has raised $6.5M in a Series C funding ronud. The funding came from Wellington Capital Management. Malauzai is based in Austin, Texas, but has links to Los Angeles via its executive team, many of whom had worked at Calabasas-based Digital Insight before it was acquired by Intuit. Malauzai said it would use the funding to grow its organization and further develop its mobile apps. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=57707 FreedomPop Adds LTE Phones ---- Los Angeles-based free wireless phone and broadband service provider FreedomPop said Thursday that it has added support for LTE, and now supports the Samsung Galaxy S4, S3, and Samsung Victory. FreedomPop said its new, LTE phones will offer up the same, free service it had been offering via WiMax, with 500MB of free data, 200 voice calls, and 500 text free each month. FreedomPop also said it would offer up unlimited talk, text ,and data for $20 per month on the new LTE phones. In conjunction with the expansion into using LTE, FreedomPop also said it has released a new, Android app offering up free calls, text, and voicemail. BakeSpace.com iPad App Gets Award ---- Los Angeles-based BakeSpace.com, the online food and recipe community founded by Babbette Pepaj, has received an awards for its iPad app, Cookbook Cafe. BakeSpace.com's app scored the award as part of the 2014 Appy Awards. The app apparently was given the "Best App for iPad Publishing" award. Cookbook Cafe is BakeSpace.com's app which allows anyone to create, market, and distribute their own, iPad and web-based cookbook. The app is aimed at home chefs, nonprofit organizations, and others who would like to publish their own compendium of recipes. Flywheel Expands Into Orange County ---- Flywheel, one of a number of mobile app developers offering up smartphone-driven, transportation-on-demand in Southern California, said this week that it has now expanded to Orange County. (More...) True(X) Media Finds $6M ---- Los Angeles-based True(X) Media--which was most recently known as SocialVibe--disclosed this week that it has raised $6M in a new funding round. The online advertising technology provider said the funding came from prior backers Jafco Ventures, Pinnacle Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners and Redpoint Ventures. The name change for SocialVibe is at least the fourth rebranding/renaming/refocusing of the company since inception, having swapped its name from Archetype Media to SocialVibe, then switching to become SVNetwork, then back to SocialVibe again in 2011. The company has now raised over $50.85M in funding since 2008. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=57704 ISSC Acquired By Microchip Technology ---- ISSC Technologies Corporation, a Taiwanese Bluetooth technology developer which has operations in Torrance, California, has been acquired by semiconductor and microcontroller company Microchip Technology, the two announced today. Microchip said it would pay approximately $328.5M in cash for ISSC, which has customer service and research activities in Torrance, in addition to headquarters in Taiwan and other facilities in Shenzhen, China. ISSC's low power Bluetooth and other wireless products include Bluetooth headsets, mice, keyboards, handsets, and other similar products. NetZero Rolls Out Broadband Efforts To Retail Locations ---- Woodland Hills-based NetZero Wireless, the wireless broadband, which is part of United Online, said this week that it is rolling out a retail effort. Vivendi Cuts Stake In Activision Blizzard ---- Santa Monica-based videogame publisher Activision Blizzard announced late Wednesday that Vivendi S.A. is planning to sell 41,499,689 shares of Activision Blizzard common stock, in a public offering. Those shares represent half of Vivendi's stake in Activision Blizzard, and is worth around $866M. According to Activision Blizzard, the offering is being run by Barclays and Credit Suisse. Vivendi had said in July of last year that it would be selling the stake in Activision Blizzard, part of a wider restructuring at Vivendi. Vivendi said in a statement that it hopes to eventually totally exit the share capital of Activision Blizzard. Zadara Signs Distance Learning Company For Cloud Storage ---- Irvine-based Zadara Storage, the developer of enterprise, cloud-based storage products led by storage veteran Nelson Nahum, reports a win this morning with distance education and learning company Echo360. Zadara Storage said that Echo360 is rolling out a new, cloud-based infrastructure for its solution, based on Zadara's cloud storage as a services running over Amazon Web Services. Zadara's cloud-based storage products helps companies used cloud storage as if they were in-house, enterprise storage arrays. Financial impact of the deployment was not announced. ACTIVE Network Signs Up Two YMCAs ---- San Diego-based sports activity registration and software provider ACTIVE Network reported two wins today at YMCA centers. ACTIVE Network said it has signed up the YMCA of the North Shore in Massachusetts and YMCA of the Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania as customers for the company's ACTIVE Net cloud platform. That software helps organizations with managing facility booking, memberships, communications, and running community programs. Financial impact of the two wins were not announced. Ixia Gets Another Nasdaq Delisting Warning ---- Calabasas-based network testing equipent and software developer Ixia reported late Wednesday that it has received yet another warning from the NASDAQ Stock Market, related to its late filing of its quarterly report for the quarter ended March 31, 2014. The warning letter comes as ixia looks to fend off a delisting of the company's stock. Ixia said it has requested a hearing wih the Nasdaq Listing Qualification Panel on June 12th, to present a plan to regain compliance with the NASDAQ listing rules. Ixia's woes trace back to the suprise discovery that the company's CEO had falsified his resume and qualifications, which triggered an audit and the need for restatements at the company. Voxox Names Systems Engineering VP ---- San Diego-based Voxox, which supplies cloud-based communications and phone services, reports this morning that it has named Shravan Kumar as its new Vice President of System Engineering. Kumar joins the company from Mavenir Systems, and also has served at Sonus, Motorola, and Telesoft. THe firm said Kumar will lead optimization of systems design and technical solution requirements for the company. Invisible Text Offers Up Disappearing Email, Calls ---- Los Angeles-based startup Invisible Text is hoping the attractiveness of disappearing messages--made popular by Snapchat--might rub off on its new software, saying Wednesday that it is launching a new set of apps for the iPhone to let users send disappearing email and to make secure phone calls that do not leave a footprint. The startup--led by Dez White--said it already offers up secure texting apps. Invisible Text claims that its software lets consumers send electric mail that "irretrievably disappears" after a recipient closes out a message, and that its telephone calls do not leave a call log and use secure, Voice-over-IP sessions. Boingo Wins Atlanta Hawks Arena ---- Los Angeles-based Boingo has signed on another sporting venue for its services, saying Wednesday that it has signed up the Atlanta Hawks Philips Arena as a new partner. Boingo said that it will provide wireless services -- including both cellular and Wi-Fi networks--within the areana for fans, ahead of the next NBA season. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Boingo said the deal calls for it to design, install, and manage a neutral host cellular distributed antenna system and Wi-Fi network, which will give multiple wireless carriers ability to bolster their data capacity within the arena. The Wi-Fi will be provided for free to fans via sponsors and advertisers. Newlight Technologies Gets Big Win At Dell ---- Irvine-based Newlight Technologies, which is developing carbon negative technology which converts greenhouse gases into plastic, has scored a big customer win this morning, with computer manufacturer Dell. According to Dell, it has started switching to using Newlight's AirCarbon, its new, carbon-negative packaging material. The move is part of an increased sustainability push for Dell. Newlight is coming off a recent funding round for Newlight, which said in April it has raised $9.2M in funding, bringing its total raised to $18M. Newlight's process takes methane from landfills and other sources and converts that into high-value PHA-based thermoplastic materials, comparable to polypropylene and polyethylene plastic. OneRoof Energy Targets Military Veterans ---- Just ahead of Memorial Day, San Diego-based solar energy installer and financing firm OneRoof Energy is launching and outreach effort to military veterans, saying it has launched a program to use U.S. veterans to install its rooftop solar systems. The company said it has launched a Military Appreciation Program which will make Enpower America a preferred installer for the company. Empower America is a nonprofit which recruits, trains, and employs veterans for careers in the solar industry. In addition, OneRoof Energy said it would extend a $1000 cash discount on any solar lease or purchase to veterans. Ringo Takes On International Calling Apps ---- Los Angeles-based Ringo said this morning that it has launched a new, mobile app for iOS, Android, and Windows, specifically for international calling. According to Ringo, the company's calling service does not require the Internet, Wi-Fi, or data, and instead routes the call using a phone call; the company says is rates are "significantly lower" than traditional carriers, starting at $0.003 per minute. Ringo is led by Bhavin Turakhia. Novatel Wireless Loses CFO ---- San Diego-based Novatel Wireless said late Tuesday that it has lost its CFO, Kenneth Leddon. According to Novatel Wireless, Leddon is leaving the firm to become CFO of another, un-named company. The maker of wireless modules said it is engaging an executive search firm to evaluate candidates for a new Chief Financial Officer. Novatel Wireless is a maker of wireless modems and hotspots, among them the company's MiFi mobile hotspot product. Broadcom Rolls Out New Bluetooth Chips ---- Irvine-based chipmaker Broadcom has rolled out a new line of Bluetooth chips this morning, targeted at use in things like remote controls, keyboards, and mice. The company said it has introduced two new, systems-on-a-chip (SoCs) specifically aimed at providing Bluetooth for original equipment manufacturers. The new devices, the BCM20734 and BCM20738, support Bluetooth Smart and Bluetooth Classic, the two common varieties of the Bluetooth protocol. Broadcom said the chips are sampling with customers now. Tradesy Finds $13M for Fashion Marketplace From KPCB, Others ---- In a significant vote of confidence for Santa Monica-based Tradesy, the peer-to-peer marketplace headed by Tracy DiNunzio, has raised a $13M funding round from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sir Richard Branson, Rincon Venture Partners, Bee Partners, Northgate Capital, and others. The company announced the investment on Monday. According to the company, the Series B funding will go towards accelerating its growth and scaling its team. As part of the investment, KPCB's John Doerr and Stephanie Tilenius have joined the company's board of directors.
