Cram.com said that it has launched Cram Premium, which will give students and ad-free experience while they study, which will let users access the site ad-free for $5 a month. Separately, Cram.com said it has launched a new audio tool providing text-to-speech for flashcards, supporting 18 languages. Cram.com is now owned by StudyMode. Common Interest Communities Finds $10M ---- Los Angeles-based Common Interest Communities, a developer of kiosks and communications systems aimed at student housing, said today that it has raised $10M in a private placement. Source of the funding as not announced. The company said it installs and operates custom, touchscreen consoles in buildings and housing units for students. Those touchscreens are installed in every student's room, and offer up high definition cameras, social apps, and more. The startup, which is led by Elmo Lovano, said it provides a platform where artists can present or share their repertoire and abilities, and network with others in the business. Jammcard said its features including ability to promote gigs; share music; communicate with other musicians; and more. http://www.jammcard.com RFaxis Ties With Smart Home Chip Maker ---- Irvine-based RFaxis, the developer of wireless semiconductors, reports a design win this morning with GreenPeak Technologies, a developer of smart home and home automation chipsets. RFaxis said that GreenPeak has incorporated its ZIgBee/ISM RF Front End IC (RFeIC) to tie together with its own, ZigBee systems-on-a-chip. The two are delivering a reference design for developers using their respective technology. The RFaxis chip provides all of the RF functions needed to support IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee, as well as other wirelss systems using the 2.4GHz ISM band. GreenPeak's chips are used by manufacturers of home automation gateways, home security, home healthcare, set-top boxes, lighting control, and smart energy products. Qualcomm Makes Strategic Investment In RetailNext ---- San Diego-based Qualcomm has put its weight behind a developer of software used for Big Data analysis of physical retailers, in a strategic funding. RetailNext, which develops software used by retailers to apply Big Data to the information being generated at physical stores, said Qualcomm led a strategic investment in the company, via both Qualcomm Incorporate and Qualcomm Ventures. The native advertising company--which helps place native ads on publisher web sites--was previously headquartered in New York. The company says it has more than 3,000 publishers using its services, and generates around 90 million unique monthly visitors through its service.
