The company said the round was co-led by Fidelity Biosciences and TPG Biotech, and also included Brace Pharmaceuticals, Partner Fund Management LP and Alethea Capital Management. TPG's Ben Auspitz and Eran Nadav both join the company's board as observors. Avidity said the new funds go towards advancing new cancer therapies using its technology. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/?action=showdeal&id=60579 SolarReserve Names New General Counsel ---- Santa Monica-based SolarReserve, the large scale solar power project developer, has named Pauline Doohan as its new Vice President and General Counsel, the company said Tuesday. Doohan was previously at Baker & McKenzie, where the company said she was a partner negotiating infrastructure and renewable energy transactions. She also has served at MCN Energy. SolarReserve said that Doohan has a specialty in energy and infrastructure-related transactions. SolarReserve is a developer of large, utility scale power projects, and says it currently has $1.8 billion of projects in construction and operation worldwide; a significant amount of the company's projects are based on solar thermal power plants. CytRx Chairman Passes Away ---- Los Angeles-based biopharmaceuticals research and development firm CytRx said late Tuesday that its Chairman of its Board of Directors, Dr. Max E. Link, has unexpectedly passed away. Link was 74. Link had been Chairman of the company's board since 2002, and had served on its board of directors since 1996. CytRx develops compounds being aimed at use in chemotherapy. UCSB Professor Wins Nobel Prize In Physics ---- UC Santa Barbara professor Shuji Nakamura--the inventor of the blue LED--is one of the joint winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Foundation Rights Association announced Tuesday evening. (More...) http://www.socaltech.com/ucsb_professor_wins_nobel/s-0057291.html Cornerstone OnDemand Buys Evolv ---- Santa Monica-based Cornerstone OnDemand said Tuesday afternoon that it has agreed to acquire Evolv, a machine learning and data science company based in San Francisco. Cornerstone will pay approximately $42.5M in cash, plus assume up to 2.0M in debt and issue Evolv's employees up to 200,000 shares of its common stock. According to Cornerstone OnDemand, it will use the buy to bolster its big data analytics and machine learning efforts. Evolv was venture backed by VantagePoint, GGV Capital, Khosla Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners, and developed software-as-a-service aimed at the human resources and employee management market, which helps employers better match job applicants to positions. Breakout Gaming Antes Up To Cryptocurrency Game ---- Breakout Gaming, which has operations in Los Angeles but has its headquarters in Costa Rica, said Tuesday that it plans to launch a new cryptocurrency it calls Breakout Coin (BRO). The company said it is aiming the new currency specifically at the gaming space. The company said it will begin trading its own currency for Bitcoin beginning later this month, and also has been focused on sponsoring its own World Series of Poker team. The company also has major operations in Las Vegas. DogVacay Tops 1 Million Nights, Snags New CFO ---- Santa Monica-based online dog sitting marketplace DogVacay said this morning that it has just topped 1,000,000 nights booked through the service, since its launch in 2012. The startup--which is led by Aaron Hirschorn--also disclosed this morning that it has hired former Bonobos CFO Bryan Wolff to run its financial operations. Wolff also has been at McKinsey, AllianceBernstein and Luxor Capital. TenOneTen Backs Curbside For Mobile Ordering, Pickup ---- Los Angeles-based TenOneTen Ventures, the venture capital firm run by David Waxman and Gil Elbaz, is one of the investors in a mobile app developer which helps consumers order products and pick the up at the curbside of local retailers like Target. Curbside announced an $8M funding round this morning, which was led by Index Ventures, and included AME Cloud Ventures, O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, Innovation Endeavors, Chicago Ventures, TenOneTen, WGI Group, along with angels. Financial impact of the win was not announced. TigerText said that the Texas hospice group is sending more than 40,000 TigerText messages per month between more than 150 physicians and nurses. TigerText's real time messaging services enables healthcare organizations to get all the benefits of texting and instant messaging, while remaining compliance with HIPAA and other health privacy rules.
