[email protected] 805-230-1350 www.socalip.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- eBay Launches Local Shopping App In San Diego ---- eBay has launched a new, local buying and selling app called Close 5 this week in San Diego, aimed at helping users buy and sell products to other local users. eBay said the app offers up user profiles and is a safer option to traditional, anonymous classifieds. The free app runs on iPhone and Android. Close 5 is initially targeting people looking to clear clutter from their home, and is also running a launch promotion that will award a closet or garage makeover for users who submit a photo of the messiest closet or garage. The new app comes thanks to eBay's recent acquisition of Rumgr, which was developing social selling apps very similar to Close 5. http://www.socaltech.com/ebay_launches_local_shopping_app_in_san_diego/s-0057914.html BioNano Genomics Gets $53M ---- San Diego-based BioNano Genomics said this morning that it has raised $53M in a Series C funding round, for the company's genome mapping technology. The funding was co-led by Legend Capital and Novartis Venture Fund, and also included Federated Kaufmann Fund and Monashee Investment Management, along with Domain Associates, Battelle Ventures and Gund Investment Corporation. Darren Cai of Legend Capital and Campbell Murray of Novartis join the company's board as partof the funding. http://www.socaltech.com/intelligence/index.php?action=showdeal&id=61045 YapStone Plans Big LA Expansion, Hiring ---- Silicon Valley-based payment technology provider Yapstone has big hiring plans in Los Angeles, with plans to double the size of the company's office from 35 to 70 people in the next year. According to the company, it is hiring across marketing, sales, engineering, and product. The company--which currently has offices at ROC in Santa Monica--says it is in the mist to moving to a new office in Santa Monica in order to accomodate that growth in Q1 of 2015. Yapstone develops an electronics payment platform powering marketplaces for apartment rentals, vacation rentals, and more, saying that the company powers vacation rental payments for such sites as HomeAway. YapStone was founded in Santa Monica in 1999. The company is venture backed by Accel Partners. Calnetix Buys Vycon ---- Cerritos-based Calnetix Technologies said this morning that it has acquired VYCON, the developer off flywheel-based energy storage systems. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Calnetix--which develops and manufactures high-speed permanent magnet motor generators, power electronics and magnetic bearings--said Vycon will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the company. VYCON's flywheel technology has been used for storing energy in subway systems, for wind power generation, and other areas. VYCON was venture backed by BankInvest, Cooper Capital Partners, RWE Venture Capital Funds GmbH, Sumitomo, and Tridus International. FreeConferenceCall.com Names VP ---- Long Beach-based free conference calling provider FreeConferenceCall.com has named a new VP, saying recently that it has named Robert Wise as the company's new Executive Vice President of Corporate Development. Wise had most recently been at Intercall and West IP Communications, having served there for 16 years. FreeConferenceCall.com said Wise will head up bnew business and corporate development strategies. Rubicon Selected By Apple For iAd ---- Los Angeles-based Rubicon Project said Wednesday that it has been selected by Apple, to help power Apple's iAd mobile advertising product. Rubicon said the deal gives it access to over 250,000 mobile developers. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. It has been a busy week for Rubicon Project, which announced on Monday that it had acquired two companies--iSocket and Shiny Ads, in stock deals worth around a total of $30M. Rubicon Project's Josh Wexler said at the company's NewCo Los Angeles event today that acquisitions like iSocket and Shiny Ads are part of an ongoing strategy of keeping the company innovative and ahead of the industry. CARD.com Names Technology VP ---- Santa Monica-based CARD.com, which offers up branded prepaid cards linked to such brands as The Walking Dead, Star Trek, Sesame Street, and others, has named David Wolfe as the company's new Senior Vice President of Technology. CARD.com said that Wolfe has previously served as Chief Product and Technology Officer at Mylife.com, and also has served at Brightwire, BuyWithMe.com, Radio One, Reunion.com, aand Napster, where he was CTO. CARD.com said that Wolfe will focus on new payments features and functionality, and in particular mobile and contactless payments at the company. CARD.com is led by Ben Katz. Teledyne Completes Bolt Technology Acquisition ---- Thousand Oaks-based Teledyne Technologies said earlier this week that it has complted its acquisition of Bolt Technology Corporation. The deal was worth approximately $171M, or $22.00 per share in cash.
