j2 Global Buys SugarSync
----
Los Angeles-based j2 Global has acquired the assets of online file
backup and sharing service SugarSync, the company said this morning.
Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. j2 said the buy will
expand its cloud backup revenues to more than a $70M annual run rate.
j2 Global said the acquisition is not expected to be material to the
company. SugarSync had been based in San Mateo, California, and had
been venture backed by Coral Group, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Hatteras
Venture Partners, Hercules Finance LLC, Selby Ventures, and Sigma
Partners, and had raised around $45M in funding.

Goodbye, LA Dreams: Winklevoss Twins Put Hollywood Mansion Up For Lease
----
It looks like all the grand plans by the Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss
to set up an investment outpost in Los Angeles have faded away, on
news that the twins are now leasing out their Hollywood mansion,
asking for $150,000 a month for the 8,000 square foot mansion in the
Hollywood hills. The two--who made their fortune via a highly
publicized lawsuit against former Harvard classmate and Facebook
founder Mark Zuckerberg--had said two years ago that they were
acquiring the mansion to set up a West Coast presence for their
investment firm, Winklevoss Capital, to invest in companies here. It's
unclear if the firm actually made any investments here: the firm has
yet to be publicly announced as an investor in any local startups.

Vessel, Led By Former Hulu Head Jason Kilar, Launches To Public
----
Vessel, the streaming media subscription service led by former Hulu
CEO Jason Kilar, has launched to the public, saying that consumers can
subscribe to the service for $2.99 a month. However, Vessel is

streaming video site prominently features content from such local
providers as Machinima and TasteMade, along with other MCNs, and
currently appears to have more YouTube stars than traditional, content
providers on the service.

LegalZoom Racks Up 200,000 Legal Consultations
----
Glendale-based online legal documents and help site LegalZoom has
racked up 200,000 legal consultations, as part of its expansion into
connecting consumers with attorneys, the company announced this
morning. LegalZoom offers up referrals to attorneys through its
LegalZoom Business and Personal Legal Plans product. The company says
its service helps attorneys reduce the marketing, administration, and
other tasks of finding clients.

Dell, Intel Roll Out Film On Hulu
----
In a strange intersection of corporate advertising and filmmaking,
Dell and Intel said they have released a new film on Los Angeles-based
streaming television site Hulu, produced by an Oscar winner and
including a number of well known actors. Dell and Intel said the new
film, "What Lives Inside" was directed by Oscar-winner Robert
Stromberg ("Maleficent") and stars Colin Hanks ("Fargo"), J.K. Simmons
("Whiplash") and Catherine O'Hara ("Best In Show"). The two technology
firms said the film is a "social film" based on ideas from the public
and feature its products.

Guidance Software Signs Life Insurer
----
Pasadena-based forensics and electronic discovery software developer
Guidance Software reported a win this morning with a large life
insurance company. According to Guidance Software, the un-named
insurer is using its EnCase Cybersecurity and EnCase Analytics, as
part of a Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)
effort. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Encase said the
life insurance company has more than 1,000,000 policies.

AllSay Looks To Combine News, Opinion, Action
----
Los Angeles-based AllSay, a new startup which is developing
personalized news and opinion sharing apps, said Monday that it has
launched a beta of its new app and service, which both helps provided
personalized news items to users--as well as let them vote and express
their opinions on local issues. The startup said it has opened up in a
select number of U.S. cities, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and
Orange County. The startup's app runs on both iOS and Android. AllSay,
which was founded by Geoff Campbell, says that it is taking those
opinions--generally on state and local issues--to local government,
organizations, and businesses--to provide those groups with better
data on issues. Campbell is a former executive of Dish
Digital/SlingTV.

----
An analysis published Monday , shows that efforts on San Diego
