Zach Frechette: Quarterly is the leading platform for online influencers to connect (More...) http://www.socaltech.com/quarterly_and_science_inc/s-0060954.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------- NantBioScience, Sorrento Therapeutics Launch $100M JV ---- Los Angeles-based NantBioScience and San Diego-based Sorrento Therapeutics announced this morning that the two have launched a new, joint venture, aimed at small molecule treatments for cancer. The two said they will invest $100M in the new, joint venture, which they call a "moonshot program" to develop small molecules for treating caner. The companies said the new, JV will be 60 percent owned by NantBioScience, and 40 percent owned by Sorrento. NantBioScience is one of the units of NantWorks, the collection of companies run by billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. QLogic Sees Big Revenue Miss ---- Aliso Viejo-based storage networking equipment maker QLogic announced this morning that it is expecting approximately $113M in first quarter revenues, far below its previously forecasted range of $124M to $132M in revenues. According to the publicly traded company, the revenue shortfall comes due to general weakness in the traditional enterprise server and storage markets, and a build-up of inventory at certain of its OEM customers. QLogic blamed a slower transition to next-generation servers in the enterprise. The company pre-announced the expected shortfall ahead of its results, which are due on July 30th. ResMed Buys CareTouch ---- San Diego-based a href="http://www.resmed.com";>ResMed, which manufactures and supplies medical devices and equipment, said Wednesday that it has acquired CareTouch, which provides internet-based resuppl programs for home medical equipment. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. ResMed said that CareTouch will be rebranded as ResMed ReSupply. CareTouch was founded in 2003, and was based in Colorado. Pathway Genomics Adds Advisor ---- San Diego-based Pathway Genomics said this morning that it has added a new advisor to the company. Pathway Genomics said it has added Paul Sonnier, a digital health advocate and social entrepreneur known for his Twitter and LinkedIn following, has joined the company's Strategic Advisory Board. Pathway Genomics said Sonnier has more than 35,000 members in his Digital Health group on LinkedIn, and over 25,000 Twitter followers. USC, National Academy of Engineering Ties With TV Series Creator To Find Female ---- Can a TV show convince more females to pursue an education and career in engineering and science? A new effort, driven by the USC Viterbi School of Engineering, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and Lee Zlotoff, the creator of MacGyver, is hoping to create a new TV series--called "The Next MacGyver"--which will star and feature stories about women engineers. The group has been running a contest--with finals at the end of July--to help surface ideas for that TV series. MaintenanceNet develops cloud-based software used by companies to manage the renewal of service contracts and maintenance contracts, automatically handling quoting, notifications, and also online renewals. Cisco said the move would help it partners capture high-volume and low-dollar sales opportunities that may risk being overlooked. MaintenanceNet is led by Scott Herron. The company had raised a total of only $12M in funding from Express Ventures and Kayne Anderson. YouTube Star PewDiePie Earned $7M In 2014 ---- In what helps prove the increasing importance of content on YouTube, popular Youtuber PewDiePie revealed this week that he earned more than $7M in 2014, thanks to payouts from YouTube. Hard numbers and information on YouTube payouts are hard to come by--thanks to the site's terms and conditions to creators--but PewDiePie's revelation should be welcome news to the legions of aspiring YouTubers in Los Angeles now creating content for the video site.
