IBM Watson AI XPRIZE Competition Opens Registration
----
The IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, the $5M competition being run by Los
Angeles-based XPRIZE, has opened up registrations to teams, and has
published guidelines for the artificial intelligence competition. The
new competition is seeking to spur teams to create artificial
intelligence technology, to challenge some of humanity's most pressing
challenges. The new AI XPRIZE--unlike the group's other challenges--is
providing an open ended challenge, letting the teams who are entering
define their own goals, picking their own focus on healthcare,
education, energy & environment, global development and exploration,
or other areas--as long as the solution is based on using AI to solve
those problems. According to the XPRIZE foundation, the idea is to
demonstrate how "AI can be used as a tool for good."

HomeHero, Cedars-Sinai Link On Patient Transition Program
----
Santa Monica-based HomeHero, the home care technology and services
startup founded by Kyle Hill and Mike Townsend, has linked up with
Cedars-Sinai to launch a new program called Safe Transition Home.
According to HomeHero and Cedars-Sinai, the new program will help
transition patients from the hospital to home, with the goal of
reducing inpatient readmissions, raising patient satisfaction and
improving health outcomes. HomeHero, which is backed by Graham
Holdings, Social+Capital Partnership, Science Inc, The Launch Fund,
Tencent Holdings, Techstars and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, is
currently part of the 2016 Techstars Healthcare Accelerator being run
at Cedars-Sinai. Financial impact of the deal was not announced.

Qualcomm Sues Chinese Company Over Patent Licensing
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm has filed suit against a Chinese company,
Meizu, saying that Meizu has refused to enter into a licensing deal
for the company's technology. According to Qualcomm, it had attempted
to negotiate with Meizu to sign a patent license agreement, consistent
with Qualcomm's agreement with China's National Development and Reform
Commission (NDRC) in 2015--but that Meizu has gone ahead and used
Qualcomm's technology without a patent license agreement. That
agreement covers 3G (WCDMA and CDMA2000) and 4G (LTE) wireless
communications standards. Qualcomm said that more than 100 other
companies in China have agreed to the terms of that rectification plan
it agreed to with the NDRC.

Study: More Than 7,620 Cybersecurity Jobs In San Diego
----
A new study, run by a local nonprofit focused on cybersecurity in San
Diego, has tallied up the numbers and found that there are more than
7,620 people employed in the cybersecurity industry in San Diego. The
San Diego Cyber Center of Excellence--which is specifically focused on
bolstering the growth of the industry in the city--said it found there
are a total of 7,620 cyber security jobs in the city, including 3,390
employees at the Navy Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command
(SPAWAR), plus another 4,230 people employed across another 104
technology companies. The group--which also tallied up jobs last
year--said the numbers are a 14.7 percent growth from 2014.

Stamps.com Buys ShippingEasy
----
El Segundo-based Stamps.com said this week that it has acquired
ShippingEasy, a developer of web-based multi-carrier shipping software
product that helps e-commerce providers process, fulfill, and ship
their products. Stamps.com said it would pay $55M in cash for
ShippingEasy, which was based in Austin, Texas. ShippingEasy had been
a direct competitor to Stamps.com, particularly for small e-commerce
providers.
