ROX Medical Gets $40M Funding
----
San Clemente-based ROX Medical, a startup developing medical devices
to treat hypertension, has raised $40M in a Series E funding, the
company said this morning. The funding was led by Novartis Venture
Fund and Apple Tree Partners and also included prior investors Versant
Ventures and Domain Associates. ROX Medical, which is led by CEO
Rodney Brenneman, develops a stent-like device placed between the
artery and vein in the upper leg, which reduces blood pressure. David
McIntyre and Sami Hamade of Apple Tree Partners and Steven Weinstein
of Novartis Venture Fund all join the company's Board of Directors
with the funding.

Qualcomm, AT&T Link On Wireless Drone Communications
----
San Diego-based Qualcomm and AT&T announced this morning that the two
will test the control of unmanned aerial vehicles using AT&T's 4G LTE
network. The two said the effort will go to see how cellular networks
can support future, wide scale deployment of drones, measuring
coverage, signal, strength and mobility across network cells, to
support the ability of drones to fly well beyond an operator's visual
range. Financial details of the link between the companies was not
announced. According to the companies, trials of the use of 4G LTE
networks to control drones will begin later this month at Qualcomm
Technologies' San Diego Campus, and further testing will happen at the
company's FAA-authorized UAS Flight Center.

Masimo Rolls Out Wearable Device At Apple Stores

Irvine-based medical device maker Masimo, best known for providing its
pulse oximeters in the healthcare and medical devices market, is
making a crossover into the retail wearables market today, saying that
it has launched a new device at the Apple Store. (More...)

Brain Corp. Aims At Commercial Market With Robotic Floor Cleaners
----
San Diego-based Brain Corp., which is developing vision-based,
autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) systems for self driving
vehicles, says it is in a deal to bring its technology to the
industrial and commercial cleaning area. According to the company, it
has partnered with NSS Enterprises, a manufacturer of industrial and
commercial cleaning equipment, to incorporate its robotics and vision
technology into  industrial floor care machines. The two said the deal
will bring a self-driving, floor cleaning machine to market, which
autonomously navigates facilities. Brain Corp. is backed by Qualcomm
Ventures, and is led by CEO Dr. Eugene Izhikevich.  Brain Corp. says
its use of robotics will allow employees to focus on "high value
tasks".

Smith Micro Raises $4M
----
Aliso Viejo-based software developer Smith Micro Software announced
this morning that it has raised $4M in funding, via a note and warrant
financing. The funding came from Unterberg Koller Capital Fund L.P.,
plus William W. and Dieva L. Smith.  William Smith is the current CEO
and founder of Smith Micro Software. The company said the debt funding
goes towards growth and to maximize opportunities from two recent
acquisitions--Birdstep Technologies and iMobileMagic. Smith Micro is
publicly traded on the NASDAQ as SMSI.

Activision Sets Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Beta Launch
----
Santa Monica-based Activision said over the weekend that it plans to
launch its beta of the next expansion to its popular game, Call of
Duty: Infinite Warfare, into a multiplayer, beta launch, on October
14th. The company--which ran its big Call of Duty gathering, the Call
of Duty XP event, at the The Forum in Inglewood over the weekend--said
the title will first be available on the PlayStaiton 4. The beta will
be available to fans who pre-order the title.
