Interview with Shaan Sethi, Jaanuu
----
It's fairly unusual to see an apparel company with venture backing,
and particularly unusual to see one with the strong lineup of
investors that LA-based Jaanuu (www.jaanuu.com) has behind the
company. Jaanuu, which provides medical apparel, is backed by Sipadan
Capital, Roundhouse Ventures, Innovation Global Capital and Deborah
Benton (board member of The Bouqs, Carbon38 and Vow To Be Chic), along
with BAM Ventures, John Suh (CEO of LegalZoom), Ron Burkle (founder of
The Yucaipa Companies), Sean Collins (founder of BCG Digital
Ventures), Rick Marini (founder of Tickle and BranchOut), Potenza
Capital, M3 Ventures and others. We caught up with co-founder and CEO
Shaan Sethi to hear more about the startup, as well as Shaan's journey
from investment banking to running an apparel startup. Shaan
co-founded Jaanuu with his sister, Neela, a pediatrician.

What is Jaanuu?

Shaan Sethi: By way of background, I came from the finance side of the
world. In the early 2000's, I'd worked (More...)

Monoprice Opens New, Brick and Mortar Store
----
Rancho Cucamonga-based Monoprice, which made its name offering up
house-branded, consumer electronics accessories such as charging
cables, speakers, switches and adapters, and many other areas, said it
has opened up a new, brick and mortar store at its headquarters. The
company, led by Bernard Luthi, said the new retail store replaces a
"will call" center at the location, and features 1,900 square feet of
retail floor space. The company now offers up a large selection of
consumer electronics, including computers, 3D printers, stereo
amplifiers, and more.

FMT Consultants Sells Off Business Unit
----
Carlsbad- and Los Angeles-based IT services provider FMT Consultants

Second Sight Medical Expands Into South Korea
----
Sylmar-based Second Sight Medical Products said this morning that it
has entered the South Korean market, after its visual prosthetics
products were implanted into two patients in that country. According
to Second Sight Medical, the implants were facilitated by distribution
partner Kisantech Co. Second Sight Medical, led by CEO Will McGuire,
says it is in the midst of an effort to expand its footprint in Asia.
The company's medical implants are used to provide useful vision to
blind patients.

Palisades Venture Capital Mystery Solved
----
The true origins of funding in two, Los Angeles area companies in late
June, Gamemine, and BlockFraud, has been solved by Dan Primack of
Axios. According to Primack, Gamemine's $20M investment round was
actually self funded by CEO Daniel Starr, with family and friends. It
also appears that Starr is also the (sole) investor behind Los
Angeles-based BlockFraud. A number of Los Angeles area insiders were
attempting to figure out what the mysterious "Palisades Venture
Capital Group" was from. There is an existing, unrelated Palisades
Venture Capital, which now goes by Palisades Growth Capital. The "new"
Palisades Venture Capital, which is actually GameMine's CEO, Daniel
Starr, had posted a mysterious website which was plagiarized from the
existing website of Spark Capital.

YP Holdings Acquired By Dex Media
----
Los Angeles-based YP.com, the provider online directories and services
to help businesses get their companies online which has been remade by
a number of technology executives into a provider of local business
marketing and automation software, has been acquired by competing
directory provider Dex Media. Dex Media said on Friday that it has
acquired YP Holdings, which operates both YP.com and the Real Yellow
Pages, and will create a new combined company called DexYP. Financial
details of the acquisition were not announced, however, DexYP says the
combined company will have pro forma net revenues of more than $2
billion in 2017. YP.com had been owned by private equity investor
Cerberus Capital Management.

MaxLinear Gets Design Win With Comtrend
----
Carlsbad-based radio frequency chipmaker MaxLinear said Friday that it
has been selected by Comtrend Corp., for a new powerline adapter.
According to MaxLinear, its powerline G.hn wave-2 networking chipset
is being used in Comtrend's PG-9083 G.hn Powerline Adapter, which lets
users extend their home local area networks using existing power
outlets. Expected shipment volumes on the new device were not
announced.

SpaceX Dragon Returns From ISS
----
The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, which has been docked at the
International Space Station since early June, has successfully
splashed down in the Pacific, in the first re-flight of a complete
spacecraft to and from the ISS. The SpaceX Dragon splashed down around
5:15 a.m. Monday morning after departing the ISS early Monday morning.
The Dragon had originally been scheduled to leave the ISS on Sunday
morning, but the return of the Dragon was shifted a day due to rough
seas in the Pacific.

Vector Challenges SpaceX With $21M In Funding For Satellite Launch Systems
----

is based in Arizona, but the majority of its founders are from Los
Angeles. The company says it has now raised $31M in total. Vector, led
by CEO Jim Cantrell, is developing a rocket-pwered launch vehicle
specifically aimed at launching "microsatellites" into space. The

Elon Musk Shows Off LA Tunnel Construction
----
Elon Musk has released several videos of tunnel construction at the
SpaceX, showing the installation of an elevator designed to take cars
or "pods" down to a newly completed tunnel. The tunnel's entrace is
apparently being built in SpaceX's parking lot. Musks's "The Boring
Company" is hoping to build a network of tunnels under Los Angeles to
help people avoid traffic congestion and transport people across the
city, but has mostly been mum about its efforts.

TCVN. Intellectual property is becoming increasingly important when it
comes to business valuation as well as success – especially for tech

and licensees. It also proves that you value investment in research and
development and are prepared to take appropriate steps to protect those
investments. This presentation will provide an introduction to
intellectual property generally (including patents, trademarks, copyright
and trade secrets), as well as related issues to keep in mind, so that you
will be better equipped to identify and protect your intellectual property
in a timely manner, both in the U.S. and abroad. See
