A new report from the UCLA Anderson Forecast says
that--unfortunately--Russia's invasion of Ukraine has injected more
uncertainty into the U.S. and California economies, just as things were
heading back to "normal" after two years of a pandemic. The national
economic forecast by UCLA Anderson said that the events in Ukraine have
"injected a new sense of uncertainty and risk into the forecast". (More...

*Gumball Gets $10M For Podcasting Advertising*

Los Angeles-based Gumball, a startup which lets advertisers place ads on
podcasts, has raised $10M in a Series A funding. The funding came from
Union Square Ventures and Good Friends, as well as Craft Ventures, Vertical
Venture Partners, Animal Capital, Calm Ventures, Gaingels, and Riverside
Ventures. The startup says it is offering up a way for advertisers to buy
"host-read" ads in podcasts, which is similar to how advertising often

*Wavemaker Raises $136M Fund In Southeast Asia*

Los Angeles- and Singapore-based Wavemaker Partners has closed a new, $136M
venture capital fund, focused on investing in startups in Southeast Asia.
The firm--which has funds both focused on the U.S. as well as Southeast
Asia--said that limited partners in the new fund included Temasek Holdings
Pte, Pavilion Capital, International Finance Corp. and Vulcan Capital. The
firm now has more than $300M under management. The fund is its fourth fund.

*Creyon Bio Gets $40M For Precision Medicine*

San Diego- and Research Triangle Park, NC-based Creyon Bio said Tuesday
that it has raised $40M in a funding round. The funding was led by DCVC Bio
and Lux Capital, along with Casdin Capital, Alexandria Venture Investments,
and BioBrit. The company said the new funds go towards its platform and
expanding its team. The company says it is developing a drug development
platform which created data sets used for oligonucleotide-based medicines,

*Clearlake Capital Buys Discovery Education*

Santa Monica-based private equity investor Clearlake Capital announced this
morning that it is acquiring Discovery Education, a developer of
educational software, from another private equity investor, Francisco
Partners. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced.
According to Clearlake Capital, it will become majority shareholder in
Discovery Education, with Francisco Partners retaining a minority equity

*Griffin Gaming Partners Raises $750M Fund*

Santa Monica-based Griffin Gaming Partners announced on Monday that it has
closed a new, $750M investment fund focused on the video game indutry. The
new fund is led by Phil Sanderson, Peter Levin, and Nick Tuosto. The firm
says it now has more than $1M under management, including an earlier, $235M
fund it raised in 2020. Griffin says it is investing "at the intersection
of Content, Software Infrastructure, Social Platforms, and gaming-related
