Sorry for a post that's long and self-promotional, but I think it will be of
interest to the folks on this list.

Tomorrow will be the last ConQwest "big game" in Portland, Oregon. ConQwest is
a promotional event in 10 cities for Qwest Wireless, which was developed by
area/code (that's me, http://www.playareacode.com) with the ad agency SS+K.

ConQwest is a high-stakes treasure hunt in the urban jungle. Five teams of
high-school students, armed with Qwest Wireless phonecams, race through the
city searching for treasure in the form of images called semacodes. Semacodes
are the 2-D barcodes that can be captured by phonecam and decoded into digital
information. The technology, pioneered by Semacode, Inc, was further refined by
Dennis Crowley (of Dodgeball.com), and Kamida.

In the game, the semacode are integrated into the city, as stickers, 20' high
billboards, as small space ads in newspapers, and even in the backgrounds of
fake ads for fake products, a highly visible "public secret." Players shoot the
codes with phonecams to get points, and establish control over territory
through the use of 15' high totem animals.

It's a bit difficult to imagine, but here are some personal photos from last
year:

(1) Some of the players preparing for game, (2) In-game semacode billboard ,
(3) totem animals during a base challenge , (4) player shooting code in play ,
(5) game code in the local newspapers , (6) team with map and communications
tactics.

Just last week ConQwest won a Silver Clio, which I think is the first time a
Clio was ever awarded to a game, or to a 15' inflatable mountain lion.

Anyway, if you're in Portland, check it out, starting at 11AM tomorrow, from
Pioneer Square. You can also follow the game live on the web, which displays
the location-based info. The Tucson game, for example looked like this ...
tomorrow's game isn't live yet, but will be here.
