You might want to contact Lula.org or UUASC.org, these are Local Linux and Unix user groups, that can help you with MySQL.
Also, I think one of them might have done a presentation on how to do this in the past already that is archived on their site.
For the security part, there are 2 types of available security, the wireless type as in WEP/ WPA, and SSL VPN, for that you would need knowledge to set up an Apache server along with you MySQL that could both run on Linux or Unix. Or you could run a combination of the two.
