Absolutely, tagging SSID’s to VLANs is the way to go. In fact, it’s been a staple for most of the muni-wifi deployments to date. On another note I just got some insider news from a friend of mine who works for Tropos on the Anaheim/Earthlink project and he told me each of their pilot areas (5 of them) are sustaining in a couple mile radius a data throughput of 1-2 Mbps. If any of you are in Anaheim the muni-wifi locations are at Harbor blvd, Lincoln Ave and around the city hall area. This network is being ran via the city of Anaheim in a partnership with Earthlink and are growing this network out as fast as they can, putting up 30 radios a day and are projecting by summer or year end the entire city of Anaheim will be blanketed with wifi.

I will have more to report on the performance of the network soon!

Here's a situation. What if you run a business where you have groups of people come in and they need internet access?

What are the best practices to prevent unathorized use.  Do you give clients a key or hide the SSID and then give it to them when they arrive?

I've heard nightmares of having open access points with port sweeps and scans. What do you do?

Thanks

It's definitely a grey area.  I talked with a VP at Cox a little bit back about this.  It's mostly unenforceable and you can easily claim ignorance if the system is open and being used by others.  In the rare occassion that they enforce this, it has only been used on people who are using a significant amount of bandwidth over long periods of time.  If you have their 10mbit package (I think that's it) and you're regularly pegging it out for most of the day, you're going to run in to a problem and they'll use that rule to enforce it.

Obviously, it's a workaround.  If you're the type of person that's concerned about the letter of the law, then the bottom line would be not to do it.  But at the same time, you could get away with it.

I see that my ISP (Cox Cable) has this in my AUP:

  • Resell or redistribute the Service to any third party via any means including but not limited to wireless technology.

The "redistribute" can be taken to mean open WiFi on my part, I would think.  Interesting to note that I can't just offer it to anyone even though I pay for it...

It seems that the issue of keeping the bandwidth "un-redistributed" falls to the consumer and might not be that easy or desireable to enforce.

You share your Internet connection to those places and don't charge?  I don't think my Cox would allow that, do you?

Read your ISP's AUP, mine allows sharing as long as I don't charge a fee.

I share my DSL with two apartments on a mountain 5 miles away and another
apartment 10 miles away.

If I decide to run an "open WiFi port" on my home LAN and let anyone
access my connection to the Internet, isn't that theft in the eyes of my
ISP?

So don't use a solar-powered Wi-Fi extender unless you take steps to
make it PRIVATE!?

(another angle for at least using WEP if not MAC filtering...)
