Can't tell what the microwave antenna is in back, but the other antenna looks like a 960 MHz link antenna. Very directional and has to be certified by the FCC (Category A or B) I think...

I found these at Death Valley Junction last week. The railroad was pulled out over 60 years and this equipment is not that old. There is no power to the box and the antenna cables are cut. What was this equipment for? Looks like they'd be for somewhere in the UHF frequency: Antenna Photo: http://snurl.com/DVJantennas Photo of the radio enclosure. It has an RCA emblem: http://snurl.com/DVJRCA Despite the removal of tracks, railroads generally retain ownership (and use) of property. They also guard it rather jealously, a point to remember when you are poking around in the outback. Your guess that this looks like UHF is probably accurate, and may have involved a ground-level point-to-point bidirectional link for communications; lacking high-level repeater locations, they perceived that a path can be established around obstacles rather than through them, while keeping all equipment located on RR-owned premises. Since most everybody's communications strategy has modernized over time, this scheme has undoubtedly been replaced with something satellite-based, but I will inquire with a friend (Amtrak employee) and see if there is more detail around - just to satisfy curiosity.
