If you are looking for portable high gain satellite antennas, that you can build yourself, then look at the Amateur Radio community.
Do a Google search for "AO40 portable umbrella antenna", AO40 being the name of a past Amateur Radio Satellite. One of the designs I've considered is this one (rotator not needed): http://eng.usna.navy.mil/~bruninga/ao40ant.html and http://www.g6lvb.com/brollydish.htm There are many more. I've been thinking of doing exactly the same thing. Wildblue <http://www.wildblue.com> has some attractive rates for usage in the US but all their equipment is designed for stationary mounting.
