I'm David Colker, a reporter at the L.A. Times. Frank Keeney, who I interviewed and featured in a 2003 article, suggested I send this group a message concerning an issue I'm currently writing about. I'm hoping to find a security expert who can demonstrate that information can be picked up from an unprotected wi-fi network. - The article would feature the demonstration to show how relatively easy it is for someone knowledgeable in the field to intercept information from one of these networks. It would also go into what measures consumers can take to prevent their own home networks from leaking. We're certainly not interested in revealing anyone's private information that's captured during a session - we just want witness it first hand to get across the point that it can be done. Ideally, we would go to a spot nearby the Times downtown or another spot where unprotected networks are likely to be found (I've taken my laptop to a restaurant near here that's on the ground floor of a building converted to lofts - just sitting at a table I was able to hop onto three unprotected networks). Another question worth exploring is how secure networks are at commercial establishments offering paid or free wi-fi to customers (coffee shops, etc). If someone could help us with this demonstration, that would be terrific. Ideally, we'd like to do it early next week, even as early as Monday. Thanks very much.
