Welcome to the list! J Traffic on here can be somewhat sporadic. Apologies
for not responding sooner.

The city of Maywood, has a WiFi network FREE for residents and business
owners.

[Charles N Wyble]

Ah yes. This is very interesting. It's mentioned in the Wikipedia article
about the city:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maywood%2C_California

I will have to visit and talk with the city officials and IT people.

The city of Maywood has a five year contract with Nexlogic the tech. company
managing Maywood Wifi.

[Charles N Wyble]

Interesting. NexLogic appears to be a Printed Circuit Board design and
manufacturing company. Is http://www.nexlogic.com/ the website of the
company managing the network?

Maywood is using Motorola 2.4 GHz MEA Network.

[Charles N Wyble]

Do you have any more information on this product/service? Doing a quick
search turns up
http://www.motorola.com/governmentandenterprise/contentdir/en_US/Files/Gener
al/data_sheet_iap6300.pdf

Nextlogic recommends:

High-Powered WiFi Bridge

[Charles N Wyble]

Can you expand on this a bit? I presume they are referring to signal
strength/coverage area?

Alpha Network AIP-W619H

and External High Gain Antenna, Pacific Wireless Roo Tenna 2 panel Antenna

Model R2T24-15

Note: Alpha Network is the OM of WiFi Bride

[Charles N Wyble]

Do you have links for any of these items?

What other products do you recommend to use Public FREE WiFi.

[Charles N Wyble]

Generally all that is needed is a wireless client (which could be a laptop,
desktop, phone) anything that can talk to an 802.11a/b/g node.

I got your info. from the company Talley Communications Corp

I just got few days back the book WiFi Toys

[Charles N Wyble]

Ah yes. That is an interesting book!

The products I am using now that are working for me with the Motorola 2.4
GHz MEA Network (Maywood WiFi) are

Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter

Hawking:

-WiFi signal booster

Wireless-G Ap/Bridge

[Charles N Wyble]

Yes those are very fine products.

What type of antennas do you recommend?

What type of signal booster do you recommend?

What type of POE do you recommend?

What type of amplifiers do you recommend?

[Charles N Wyble]

Those are some good questions. I don't have any recommendations off the top
of my head. I am currently researching Wifi networks and will be giving two
presentations on them in the coming months. One at SGVLUG (www.sgvlug.org)
and one at IEEE Thousand Oaks chapter. I'll make sure to post here again
with more details as the date gets closer.

I would like to know when the group is meeting?

I am interested in becoming a member.

[Charles N Wyble]

Unfortunately in person meetings have not occurred for some time. However
many members can be found at the various Linux groups in the area such as
http://carson.lilax.net (I run this group) or http://www.uuasc.org You will
find a very large overlap between those interested in Linux/open source and
wireless.
