I have found the Linksys wirelless router very effective, less than $100. I hardwire a Desktop to it, and connect it to the cable modem.
I run multiple laptop PC's through the wireless connection.sometimes I run another desktop wireless at the same time.Download rates are usually over 1000kbps, sometimes 2k.
I recommed this Linksys unit.

I'm looking to set up a wireless lan from either cable
or dsl in my apartment building to possibly share with
neighbors on the floor or upstairs. Does anyone have
any recommendations for hardware? I personally have a
Wintel PC (running Win 2K) and a PowerBook G4 (running
OS X) that I'd like to have sharing the DSL/Cable
connection.
I'm a bit confused on the differences between many of
the products (some are called Access Points, some are
called Routers, some specifically say Cable/DSL
Router). Is there a difference? I've also heard that
Access Points (or Routers, whatever the terminology
is) don't play along well with all Wireless devices
(support for the Airport Card in my PowerBook for
instance).
So, can people please email me their setups or
recommended some setups for hardware? (WAP, Router,
wireless adapters, etc) I'm not looking to spend a lot
of money here. Just the basics, with security in
mind.
Thanks for all your help guys. Keep up the good work.
-Bill
