This came up at Thursday's meeting. Just over two years ago when I started working with wireless computer networks I realized that the Amateur Radio operators were the people that had the knowledge about RF that I lacked. A year and a half ago I passed the simple no code license. My association with Ham Radio operators has been a great asset to me in working with wireless computer networks.
30 to 40% of the attendees at SOCALWUG are licensed ham Radio operators. Amateur Radio Field Day goes for 24 hours. Today, Saturday at noon until Sunday at Noon. This happens every year on the last Saturday in June. This event is not to be missed! Almost every club in the world does a setup outdoors on battery or generator power. Then it's a contest to make as many contacts over the radio as possible. Computers have invaded the hobby. I run a laptop mounted in the console of my Suburban that runs an APRS program. This is a Ham radio location service that allows real time mapping of other APRS users as well as text chat over the radio that is gatewayed to the Internet. There are lots of Ham clubs all over the world. Do a Google search. Nearly every city will have at least one sometimes two clubs. I'm going to visit these two Field Day events this Saturday in the LA area: http://www.qsl.net/w6ka/ http://www.qsl.net/cvrc/ Frank Keeney -- ---------------------------------------------------------------- Pasadena Networks, LLC. http://pasadena.net 626-676-4761 Wireless equipment, support and solutions. http://www.pasadena.net/shop/
