Intel Centrino Explained
By Mike Outmesguine

What exactly is Intel Centrino?

The Intel Centrino package is, for the most part, a marketing package for
Intel components optimized for wireless networking. These include the
Pentium M processor, the Intel 855 Chipset, and an Intel Wireless snap-in
module. When a laptop maker puts all of these products into a laptop, they
are allowed to use the Intel Centrino logo.

Some laptop makers may not include all of the components together, and will
not participate in the logo branding campaign. For example, the Pentium M,
with its lower voltage and support for longer battery life, is a great
laptop-ready processor. But the wireless module may not fit into the laptop
vendors plans.

In the past, such branding allowed computer companies to share costs of
advertising with Intel - as long as the logo was displayed. Remember the
"Intel Inside" and familiar musical chords in TV spots from years past?
Computer companies got spiffed to put that logo in their marketing message.
I believe we will find similar motivations with Intel Centrino.

This branding and packaging is a great way to bring the concept of wireless
to the mass-market. And with Intel backing a multi-million dollar marketing
campaign, you can expect that people will become aware of it.

I applaud Intel for coming up with this brand and putting out the message of
"everywhere computing".
