I recently did a 45 minute war drive down busy PCH in the beach cities with both a gold Orinoco & SMC2532W-B (200mW) running NetStumbler. The Orinoco stumbled into 66 AP's, the SMC stumbled into 129. Both identical laptops sat in the passenger's seat, internal antennas about 12" apart. I know this is not a very scientific test, there was probably lots of interference between the 2 cards, but, as far as I'm concerned, the SMC receives much better than the Orinoco.

Another experiment I did is detailed in: http://www.catalina42.org/war-sail/

Summarizing this experiment, SMC saw 290 AP's, Orinoco 207. True, the SMC experiment was done 1 month later, possibily accounting for more AP's. I don't believe 83 AP's were added during that time.

For the 200mW cards the receive sensitivity does not seem to be much improved from the regular 30 or 50mW cards. To increase the effective range of the link you need to have increased transmit power as well as improved receiver sensitivity in tandem, otherwise if you can send a packet further but the receiver cant recieve the packet sent from the other side, the link will drop.

Has anyone seen any correlation or study, between the transmit power and the receiver sensitivity for rayleigh fading environemnt ( or some other channel model ) ?

 Thanks

Check out the following

Zcomax : www.zcomax.com (ugly website, but really good products)
        the XI-325HP is a 200mw card.

DeMarc Tech :

(rebranded zcomax card, more support + utilities)

Senao / Engenius : http://www.senao.com/default-1.htm

All of these cards support external antennas, all of them support 2 antennas (for diversity)

I also havent been able to find a high power PCMCIA card. Did anyone got a chance to use a client with more than 100mW power ?

Anyone have some leads on 200mW PCMCIA cards that are available for purchase?

Also, is the Cisco Aironet 350 card the same as the Aironet 352 pc?
