PASSING A MESSAGE!!!! FROM THE CHAPTER.
All, Al Petrick (our speaker for Thursday - Vice Chair of IEEE 802.11) had an
emergency
and will not be able to make his presentation at our meeting Thursday night, October
30th. He apologized and indicated that he would have to postpone till a later date
(probably Feb 9th, 2004).
We quickly lined up another distinguished local speaker (Bernard Debbasch - Vice
President of DSL products at Globespan-Virata). He has a wealth of information and is
an
excellent speaker with great technical depth. He was lined up to give us a talk some
time in 2004. When the emergency occurred, I contacted Bernard and he graciously agreed
to help out and give his talk on such a short notice even though it would greatly
disrupt his very busy schedule. We trust that you will be gracious in return and attend
what we believe will be a very interesting presentation. The announcement, abstract and
bio are shown
below.

 Talk outline:

The late 90s brought Broadband to the masses with endless promises for applications,
speed and ubiquity. The first part of the presentation looks at these promises and at
the overall Broadband industry track record. We will look at the regional anomalies in
the deployments of these technologies and how Broadband is now participating in the
economic recovery.

The second part of the presentation focuses on the most deployed Broadband technology,
DSL, and looks at the more recent technological developments. As the technology
matures,
the industry will be able to deliver on some of the promises mentioned earlier: VDSL is
soon coming to a phone jack near you! Finally, as in any emerging technology, standards
battles are also part of the landscape. We will look at the recent developments by the
IEEE802.3ah Working Group (Ethernet in the First Mile EFM) which will be competing
with the other broadband technologies.
